Movies for 8-Year-Olds
Eight is when many kids are ready for their first real adventure movies. They want sword fights, dragons, space battles and villains with some bite, and they can enjoy a scary scene if they trust it will turn out all right. What still catches them out is fear that lingers after the credits and sad moments nobody warned them about. These picks aim for that balance, across animation and live action, new and old.
Every pick comes from our parents' guide, and the rule is plain: every movie here has a guide age of 7 to 8. Within that range, the useful distinction is action versus heavy feelings. Star Wars, How to Train Your Dragon and The Super Mario Bros. Movie earn their age mostly with battles and a menacing villain. Wonder, Hidden Figures and Hugo have little action but deal with bullying, racism and grief. Deaths and losses come up often at this age, and the notes flag the ones most likely to upset a child.
If you're unsure, Cool Runnings, Freaky Friday (2003) and Hidden Figures have the least to frighten anyone. Save Spirited Away and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial for a child who is solidly eight: the first is eerie throughout, and the second has two s-words and a long scene in which E.T. seems to die. Star Wars
Movie · 1977The film that makes lifelong fans of eight-year-olds: a farm boy joins a smuggler and two droids to rescue a princess from the Empire. Most deaths are bloodless, but a few land hard: Luke finds the burned bodies of his aunt and uncle, a severed arm lies bloody in the cantina, a planet is destroyed, and a mentor dies.
How to Train Your Dragon
Movie · 2010For a dragon-mad eight-year-old: Hiccup, the scrawny misfit of a Viking village, secretly nurses a wounded dragon instead of killing it, and the flights are thrilling. Battles are loud, frequent and bloodless, though a few Vikings are killed or maimed. The finale pits the heroes against a gigantic dragon, and Hiccup ends the film missing part of his leg.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Movie · 2001Eight is a classic age to start. Harry's first year at Hogwarts is mostly wonder and friendship, though bullies taunt him and his relatives keep him in a cupboard. His parents' murder is glimpsed in flashback, and the scares include a three-headed dog, a troll, a hooded figure feeding on a dead unicorn and a villain who crumbles to dust.
Cool Runnings
Movie · 1993An underdog comedy that gets real laughs from eight-year-olds: three Jamaican sprinters and a pushcart racer who have never seen snow form an Olympic bobsled team. Nothing is scary beyond one jarring crash the team walks away from. Expect mild swearing plus an "a--hole" and a "badass," a slapstick bar brawl, and rivals treating the team with snobbery and prejudice.
Spirited Away
Movie · 2001For an eight-year-old who likes dreamlike stories: when her parents are turned into pigs, Chihiro takes a job in a bathhouse for spirits to save them. No swearing, but the mood is eerie and she is often alone. A masked spirit gulps down workers whole, a dragon bleeds from the mouth, and the witch in charge smokes heavily.
The Princess Bride
Movie · 1987Eight is the sweet spot: old enough to catch the jokes, young enough to cheer every sword fight. Know that a hero screams on a torture machine until he seems dead, Inigo is badly drunk while hunting his father's killer, and Buttercup points a dagger at herself rather than marry the prince. Language tops out at "son of a bitch."
The Super Mario Bros. Movie
Movie · 2023If your eight-year-old plays the games, this is probably the one they're asking for. There's no swearing and no romance beyond crushes on Peach, though Mario is mocked by his old boss. Bowser is the concern: he burns a kingdom and plans to drop prisoners into lava, and skeletal turtles clawing out of the ground make one creepy scene.
Hidden Figures
Movie · 2016A true story an eight-year-old can follow and feel strongly about: Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson helped NASA put John Glenn in orbit, yet had to use separate bathrooms and a separate coffee pot. The racism is daily and demeaning, not violent. Expect about 20 mild swear words such as "damn," a few kisses, and friends getting tipsy.
Moana
Movie · 2016A big-hearted musical for an eight-year-old who wants a heroine with a boat, a mission and no romance. The scary parts are Te Ka, a towering lava demon, a glittering monster crab who wants Moana and Maui for dinner, and coconut-armored pirates with paralyzing darts. Moana's grandmother dies early on, though she returns as a guiding spirit.
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
Movie · 1982A boy-and-his-alien friendship that eight-year-olds still fall for, and a natural one to share if it was a favorite of yours. Know going in: two s-words, "son of a bitch" and "penis breath," E.T. getting drunk on beer, agents in sealed suits taking over the house, and a long scene in which he turns chalky white and seems to die.
Matilda the Musical
Movie · 2022A clever girl who fights back against cruel grown-ups is a hero eight-year-olds cheer for. The cruelty is cartoonish but central: the headmistress swings a girl by her pigtails and shuts children in a cupboard lined with spikes, and Matilda's parents neglect and belittle her. A circus tale she tells turns sad when an acrobat dies after giving birth.
Fantastic Mr. Fox
Movie · 2009A stop-motion caper with a dry wit that clicks with many eight-year-olds and most parents: a fox can't stop raiding three nasty farmers. Swearing is a running gag: the animals just say "cuss." The farmers shoot off Mr. Fox's tail and flood his tunnels with cider, one is rarely without a cigarette, and a switchblade-carrying rat dies after a fight.
My Octopus Teacher
Movie · 2020A nature documentary that holds an eight-year-old's attention because it plays like a friendship story: a diver slowly earns a wild octopus's trust, until she reaches out to touch him. There's no gore, but sharks hunt her and one tears off an arm. She dies naturally after tending her eggs, and a shark carries her body away.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem
Movie · 2023Four turtle brothers who just want to go to high school make this a very funny action cartoon for eight-year-olds, in scrappy, sketchbook-style animation. Fights and explosions are constant, and the villain kills several people, their screams cut off. Language runs steadier than in most cartoons, with at least seven "hells," and April is mocked as "Puke Girl."
Freaky Friday (2003)
Movie · 2003A body-swap comedy that lets an eight-year-old laugh at a mom acting like a teenager and a teen stuck being a mom, days before a wedding. Nothing is scary, and the language stops at words like "hell" and "sucks." The family is still adjusting to the dad's death three years earlier, and the Chinese restaurant scenes lean on stereotypes.
Wolfwalkers
Movie · 2020Beautiful to look at, and made for an eight-year-old who loves wolves: Robyn, an English wolf hunter's daughter, makes friends with Mebh, a forest girl who can take wolf form. Wolves are trapped and shot, local boys pick on Robyn, and a climactic battle with crossbows and a cannon leaves people and wolves hurt and one character dead.
Elio
Movie · 2025A Pixar space adventure for an eight-year-old who feels they don't quite fit in: an orphan raised by his aunt gets his wish to be taken by aliens. No swearing or romance. Bullies punch him, one fight leaves him in an eyepatch, a creepy clone pulls off its own finger, and reminders of his parents' deaths bring sad moments.
Wonder
Movie · 2017A school story for eight-year-olds just old enough to notice who gets left out: Auggie, born with a facial difference, starts fifth grade after years of homeschooling. Classmates stare, one bullies him steadily, and a brief fistfight breaks out. Daisy, the family's aging dog, dies in the saddest scene, and a subplot involves a divorced mother who drinks heavily.
The Sheep Detectives
Movie · 2026A whodunit with a flock of sheep as the detectives, and a good first mystery for an eight-year-old who likes guessing. Don't let the fluffy cast fool you: the shepherd they adore is poisoned early on, his body briefly shown, and later a ram dies fighting off vicious dogs to save two friends. The swearing is rare and mild.
Pete's Dragon (2016)
Movie · 2016One of the gentler adventures here: a forest ranger finds a feral boy who has spent six years in the woods with Elliot, a big, furry dragon. No real swearing, romance or drinking. The opening is toughest: Pete's parents die in an off-screen car crash, leaving him alone in the woods as wolves circle. Later, hunters dart and chain Elliot.
Hugo
Movie · 2011For a curious eight-year-old who likes clocks and trains: Hugo, an orphan who keeps the clocks running in a Paris train station, tries to repair a mechanical man his father left him. It builds slowly. His father dies in a fire mostly off screen, his drunken uncle turns up dead, and a station inspector with a Doberman hunts lone children.
