Elio: parents' guide

7+our pick

Best for ages 7 and up. Rated PG for some action/peril and thematic elements.

A tender, funny Pixar space adventure that suits most kids from about 7, ideally with a parent nearby for the sad parts. Elio, an orphan being raised by his aunt, longs to be taken by aliens, gets his wish, and then has to bluff his way through a standoff with a warlike alien leader. Expect bullies who punch him, a creepy clone, peril in space and in a lava flow, and reminders that his parents have died. There's no real profanity or romance, and the only drinking is wine at dinner. The bullying, the grief and a few eerie moments are why we suggest 7.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Realistic kid fights: one scuffle injures Elio's eye and leaves him in an eyepatch, and later bullies pin him down to punch him. An alien warlord threatens war in armored, cannon-firing battle suits. Two clones dissolve. The only blood is a drop from a nose.

Language

Mild

No real swearing. Mild insults such as stupid, butt and shut up, plus heck, oh my gosh and one cut-off 'what the.' When Elio speaks his made-up language, the subtitles use the symbols that usually hide swear words.

Sex and nudity

None

No romance, kissing or nudity. The closest thing is an alien scan that briefly shows Elio in his underpants, and a joke about his 'first probe' after a nose swab.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Mild

Aunt Olga has a glass of wine with dinner. Aliens offer Elio a bright drink in a cocktail-style glass that is never suggested to be alcoholic, and in one gag he and Glordon guzzle an alien beverage and throw up.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Bullies chase Elio through dark, stormy woods; a clone of him pops up in a jump scare and pulls off its own finger, bloodlessly; he's locked in a cell with a skeleton. A space-debris escape, a lava flow and a friend's near-fatal chill add tension.

Sensitive topics

  • Death of a parent
  • Bullying

Worth talking about

Elio feels so out of place on Earth that he'd rather live among aliens. What helps someone feel they belong, and how does his aunt show love even when she doesn't fully understand him?
