Inside Out 2: parents' guide

6+our pick

Best for ages 6 and up. Rated PG for some thematic elements.

A smart, gentle Pixar sequel the whole family can watch, though it may hit hardest with tweens, set inside the head of newly 13-year-old Riley at hockey camp. New emotions led by Anxiety take over and push Riley to lie, drift from old friends and try too hard to impress older girls, while Joy and the others face cartoon peril inside her mind. The climax shows Riley having a panic attack, which could be intense for anxious kids but is handled with care. There is no profanity, romance or drinking, so we suggest 6, with a conversation ready afterward.

What's in it

Violence

Mild

Cartoon mayhem inside Riley's mind: dynamite blasts, avalanches, near-falls into a chasm, and a demolition crew smashing headquarters. On the ice, a player is knocked down hard and Riley is penalized for tripping someone.

Language

None

No profanity. Mild insults such as jerk and moron, a 'heck,' and Joy's made-up curse 'Jiminy mother-loving toaster strudel.'

Sex and nudity

Mild

Riley's mind has a monument to her crushes, Disgust swoons over a video game hero, and Riley's dad hints at romantic weekend plans with her mom. A cartoon emotion briefly shows a bit of rear.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

None

No alcohol, smoking or drugs. The nearest thing is a gag in which Anxiety downs energy drink after energy drink, staged as though she were drinking something much stronger.

Scary or intense scenes

Mild

Mild peril: emotions are captured and locked in a dark vault that holds a shadowy secret, and nearly tumble into a chasm. The climactic panic attack, with Riley's breathing racing and Anxiety spinning out, is emotionally intense.

Worth talking about

Anxiety tries to protect Riley by planning for every possible disaster. How can you tell when worrying is helping you and when it is taking over?
