Wonka: parents' guide
Best for ages 7 and up. Rated PG for some violence, mild language and thematic elements.
A sweet, colorful musical comedy that's an easy pick for families with kids around 7 and up. Young Willy Wonka arrives in a city to sell his chocolates, is tricked into working off a debt in a laundry, and teams up with an orphan named Noodle and fellow workers to beat a cartel of greedy chocolatiers. The danger is played lightly but includes a gunpoint scene, a boat explosion and two characters nearly drowning in a chocolate vault. Wonka misses his late mother, and Noodle is mistreated by her cruel guardian. Language is mild, with one 'damn.' Age 7 reflects the peril and the bittersweet moments.
What's in it
Violence
MildMostly slapstick: Wonka is hit with a frying pan and a baton and has his head held in a fountain. Rivals blow up a boat, try to drown him and hold him at gunpoint as a shot hits the ceiling. A mob burns a shop.
Language
MildOne 'damn,' a 'jeez,' a misuse of God's name and 'What the devil.' Insults include 'brat,' 'peasant' and 'stupid old hag,' and a running joke mocks the police chief's weight.
Sex and nudity
MildTwo brief kisses between supporting characters, some flirting, a dance with a slap on the rear, and a villain wiggling his behind in short lederhosen. A couple is seen together in silky pajamas. No nudity.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
MildA magic chocolate makes a man act drunk until he passes out, and the police chief's craving for chocolate is played as a running addiction joke. Adults drink gin, and an Oompa Loompa mixes himself a cocktail.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateNear-drownings after a boat explosion and in a flooding chocolate vault, plus the gunpoint scene, are briefly tense. Wonka's longing for his late mother, seen in flashbacks, is touching. Noodle being locked in a filthy coop may upset sensitive kids.
Sensitive topics
- Death of a parent
- Child abuse
Worth talking about
The chocolate cartel buys off the police and even a priest. Talk about how greed spreads through a town and why it matters that Wonka shares rather than hoards.
