Live-Action Family Movies
Animation dominates family movie night, which makes it easy to forget how good a live-action family film can be. These hold a room of mixed ages with real actors and real sets: funny, warm and exciting, and a natural bridge for kids who are starting to want "grown-up" movies.
The useful split is between films made for families and grown-up films that happen to suit them. Paddington 2, Wonka and Babe were built for children and work from about five. Hidden Figures, Little Women and Back to the Future were made with adults in mind and land best with kids of nine or ten and up, who tend to be flattered to be included.
Live action feels more real than animation, so peril can hit harder: Pete's Dragon opens with a car crash, and Matilda the Musical has a headmistress who throws children. Each note gives a starting age and flags moments like these. With under-sixes, start with the Paddington films. Paddington 2
Movie · 2017The live-action family film the others here get measured against. Paddington is wrongly jailed and wins over the prison with marmalade sandwiches. Works from about six; the scariest stretch is a runaway-train climax with a brief underwater scene, and it resolves fast.
The Princess Bride
Movie · 1987Framed as a grandfather reading to his sick grandson, which suits a family audience perfectly: the boy complains about the kissing parts, just like yours will. Best from about seven. Giant rodents, a torture machine and Inigo's duel to avenge his murdered father are played lightly, though Buttercup briefly holds a dagger to her own chest.
Paddington
Movie · 2014The first film is a little scarier than the sequel: Nicole Kidman plays a taxidermist who wants Paddington stuffed, and an earthquake early on costs him his uncle. Otherwise it's as warm and inventive as its follow-up, and fine from about seven.
Wonka
Movie · 2023A musical prequel with the same gentleness and love of slapstick as the Paddington films, which share its director. Timothée Chalamet's young Willy Wonka takes on a chocolate cartel and a scheming landlady. Best from about seven: there's a gunpoint scene, Wonka grieves his late mother, and the orphan Noodle is badly mistreated.
Back to the Future
Movie · 1985The best time-travel story ever told for a family audience, plotted so tightly that adults enjoy the tenth watch. It's from 1985 and it shows: expect some swearing, gunfire in the first act and an uncomfortable scene of a bully assaulting a teenage girl in a car. From about twelve.
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
Movie · 1982Spielberg at his most tender: a lonely boy hides a stranded alien in his closet, and every kids-and-creature film since has borrowed from it. Best from about eight. The swearing is stronger than parents tend to remember, and younger children are upset by E.T. turning gray and seeming to die, and by agents in spacesuits invading the house.
Coyote vs. Acme
Movie · 2026Wile E. Coyote hires a down-on-his-luck human lawyer, played by Will Forte, to sue Acme over all those faulty products. A smart, sincere mix of live action and cartoon that Warner Bros. finished and shelved before another distributor rescued it. Fine from about seven; the violence is pure cartoon.
Matilda the Musical
Movie · 2022Tim Minchin's songs and Emma Thompson's monstrous headmistress make this the liveliest Roald Dahl adaptation. Best from about seven. Miss Trunchbull hurls a girl by her pigtails and locks children in a spiked cupboard called the Chokey, which most kids find funny and a few frightening, and a story Matilda tells ends in a mother's death.
Paddington in Peru
Movie · 2024The Browns head to the Amazon to find Aunt Lucy, with Olivia Colman as a suspiciously cheerful nun and Antonio Banderas as a riverboat captain. Not quite the equal of the first two, but kinder and funnier than most family films. Fine from about six, with some mild jungle peril.
Babe
Movie · 1995A piglet raised by a sheepdog decides he can herd sheep too. Gentle, odd and very funny, it suits children from about five. Two things to know: the farm animals talk frankly about pigs being eaten, and a sheep is killed by wild dogs, which upsets animal-loving kids.
Hidden Figures
Movie · 2016Three Black women doing the math behind NASA's early spaceflights while fighting segregation at work. A grown-up drama that suits families, and a great pick for kids from about nine who like science. The racism is shown plainly but without violence, and the language is mild.
The Kid Who Would Be King
Movie · 2019A bullied London schoolboy pulls a sword from a stone on a building site and has to turn his classmates into knights to fight Morgana. A proper adventure in the spirit of 1980s kids' films, best from about eight. Undead riders who attack at night frighten younger children.
Enola Holmes
Movie · 2020Sherlock's teenage sister runs away to London to find their missing mother, talking straight to the camera as she goes. A brisk mystery for kids from about ten. It's rated PG-13 for violence, and a few fights get rough, but there's no sex and very little swearing.
Wonder
Movie · 2017A boy with a facial difference starts school for the first time, and the film shows his year through his sister's and friends' eyes too. Best from about eight. Bullying is the main content, and the family's elderly dog dies, the scene most likely to bring tears.
Wicked
Movie · 2024Long and lavish, the story of how the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda met at school, with Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. Best from about ten: Elphaba is bullied for her green skin, her mother dies in childbirth, talking Animals are caged and silenced, and the flying-monkey finale is scary. It covers only the stage show's first act.
Little Women (2019)
Movie · 2019Greta Gerwig's version of the four March sisters, cut back and forth between two timelines, which younger kids can find confusing. Best from about ten, and especially for anyone who has read the book. One sister's long illness ends in her death, which is very sad, and the sibling fights will feel familiar.
Pete's Dragon (2016)
Movie · 2016A boy who has lived alone in the woods for years with a shaggy green dragon, told with real patience by David Lowery. The opening car crash that orphans Pete is the hard part for small children; after that it's gentle. Good from about six.
Hugo
Movie · 2011Martin Scorsese's love letter to early cinema, disguised as a mystery about an orphan who lives inside the walls of a Paris train station. Slow by kids' standards, so best from about nine. His father's death in a fire and a nightmare about a train crash are the darkest moments.
School of Rock
Movie · 2003Jack Black as a fake substitute teacher who turns a prep-school class into a rock band, and the best pick here for kids learning an instrument. It's rated PG-13 for rude humor and drug references, all mild. Fine from about ten, and great with a parent who loves the music.
How to Train Your Dragon (2025)
Movie · 2025A near scene-for-scene live-action remake, made by one of the animated film's own directors, and it works better than most remakes because the dragons feel heavy and real. Good from about seven, with loud battles and some peril. Kids who know the original will notice every change.
