Paddington in Peru: parents' guide

6+our pick

Best for ages 6 and up. Rated PG for action, mild rude humor and some thematic elements.

A gentle, funny adventure that suits young kids and their parents alike. Paddington and the Browns travel to Peru to find Aunt Lucy, who has vanished from her retirement home, and end up on a jungle quest with a riverboat captain tormented by visions of his gold-hungry ancestors. Expect plenty of peril: rapids and a waterfall, a rolling boulder, a musket and a machete drawn on the heroes, and a villain who wants the bear dead. No one is seriously hurt and the tone stays light. Language and romance are minimal. Age 6 reflects the frequent but mild danger and the worry over a missing loved one.

What's in it

Violence

Mild

Cartoonish action: a boat capsizes, characters are tied up, chased and bonked on the head, and a small plane crashes with no one hurt. A musket and machete are drawn, and a comic flashback shows explorers dying in silly ways.

Language

Mild

Very mild. A woman exclaims 'What in God's name?' and is scolded for it, two characters say 'Thank God,' and bears are called 'mangy fur bags.' Words like 'stupid' and 'failure' also appear.

Sex and nudity

Mild

Mrs. Brown is charmed by the handsome captain, who lifts his shirt to show a belly tattoo. A sleeping Mr. Brown mistakes an anteater's licks for his wife and murmurs 'not with the kids around.' Nothing more.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Mild

No one is shown drunk. The captain keeps a bar among his emergency supplies, there's a joke about a drunken night in Cusco, nuns seem to have drinks at a party, and a bottle sprays when Paddington tumbles into a drinks cart.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Paddington is swept down rapids, dangled over a cliff and nearly crushed by a boulder. The captain is haunted by visions of his ancestors, a villain says 'kill the bear,' and a big spider lands on a face. Worry for missing Aunt Lucy runs throughout.
