Luca: parents' guide
Best for ages 6 and up. Rated PG for rude humor, language, some thematic elements and brief violence.
A sunny, low-stakes Pixar adventure most of the family can share, about two sea-monster boys who pass as human in a seaside Italian town one summer. The town hunts sea monsters, so there's tension about being found out, and a teenage bully shoves kids around while townspeople threaten the boys with spears and harpoons. Language sticks to Italian-flavored insults and made-up curses, there's no romance, and the only drinking is wine at dinner. The bigger talking points are the boys lying to their parents, running away, and attempting reckless stunts, plus Alberto's father having left him to fend for himself. That's why we suggest 6.
What's in it
Violence
MildCartoon scuffles: a teen bully punches a boy in the stomach and knocks kids off bikes, a villager hurls a spear at the boys, townspeople wave harpoons, a cat scratches faces, and homemade scooters crash off ramps and cliffs with no real injuries.
Language
MildNo real profanity. Insults such as stupido, jerk, loser and bottom feeder, an Italian word roughly meaning damn, a few 'Oh God' exclamations, and stand-in curses like 'Aw, sharks' and 'holy carp.'
Sex and nudity
NoneNothing romantic or sexual. The friendship between the two boys and a girl their age is platonic, and characters are bare only in their scaly sea-monster form.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
MildGiulia's father has wine with dinner one evening. No drunkenness, smoking or drugs.
Scary or intense scenes
MildA nighttime opening where fishermen sense something in the water, a scene where the boys are exposed in the rain as harpoon-carrying townspeople close in, and Luca's fear of being sent to live in the dark deep sea. Peril is brief.
Sensitive topics
- Bullying
Worth talking about
Luca hides who he is to fit in, and the town fears sea monsters because of old stories rather than experience. Why do people fear those who seem different, and what changes their minds?
