Paddington 2: parents' guide
Best for ages 6 and up. Rated PG for some action and mild rude humor.
A warm, funny family film that suits most kids from early grade school, about a gentle bear wrongly sent to prison while his adopted family works to clear his name. The action is slapstick, and the villain is a vain actor who is more silly than menacing. The moments most likely to upset young children are Paddington crying alone in his cell, a brief flashback in which a circus performer is sent falling to her death, and a climax where he is trapped in a train car sinking underwater. There is no profanity, and the only sexual content is mild innuendo, such as a running joke about "nice buns" that refers to pastries.
What's in it
Violence
MildMostly slapstick: chases, pratfalls, a window-washing mishap, a sack of oranges to the face, and a sword-versus-dart-gun duel. Inmates threaten Paddington at first, and a short flashback shows a magician cutting a rope so a woman falls to her death, without blood.
Language
NoneNo profanity. One "oh my God" and playful insults such as "weirdo," "yellow bellies," "maggot" and "mushy brained."
Sex and nudity
MildHugs and quick kisses between a married couple. Mild innuendo: a running joke about "really nice buns" that means pastries, a guard admiring the villain in a nun disguise, and a hint that two neighbors spent the night together. Paddington cleans a window with his bottom.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
MildChampagne is served to adults on a steam train ride. Otherwise there is no drinking, smoking or drug use.
Scary or intense scenes
ModeratePaddington nearly drowns twice, once as a cub in a river and again trapped in a sinking train car. Gruff prisoners, a sad scene of him alone in his cell, and a flashback death may upset preschoolers.
