Marcel the Shell with Shoes On: parents' guide

7+our pick

Best for ages 7 and up. Rated PG for some suggestive material and thematic elements.

A gentle, quietly funny mockumentary that works best for patient kids watching alongside a parent. Marcel, an inch-tall talking shell, lives with his grandmother Connie in a house his shell community vanished from when the human couple living there split up, and a filmmaker's videos of him go viral. There is almost no swearing or violence, just small-scale peril from a dog, a fall and household hazards. The heavier part is emotional: a lost community, loneliness, and the decline and death of Marcel's beloved grandmother. The slow, talky pace and that grief are why we suggest 7 rather than younger.

What's in it

Violence

Mild

Nothing beyond small-scale mishaps: a dog barks and lunges at the shells, Connie falls off a washing machine and cracks her shell, and Marcel bumps into walls while rolling in a tennis ball. A couple's arguments are heard.

Language

Mild

Very mild. One 'damn' and around nine uses of 'oh my God,' plus 'dang it,' 'idiot,' 'shut up' and 'tush.' A little playful name-calling.

Sex and nudity

Mild

No romance or nudity. A bathroom gag implies the hairs Marcel collects from the tub drain are pubic hair, and he makes kissy noises and teasing 'ooh, baby' remarks.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Mild

No real drinking or drugs. A bee is joked about as tipsy from too much nectar, a cork pops at a celebration, and a fan-made meme about Marcel carries a drug joke.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Mild peril from a dog, a squirrel, heights and a washing machine, plus a stormy flashback of the humans fighting while the shells hide. The weight is emotional: Marcel's family vanished earlier, and his frail grandmother dies late in the film, followed by a small funeral.

Worth talking about

Marcel worries about being left alone and slowly learns to accept change. How do people keep the memory of someone they love alive after that person is gone?
