Paddington: parents' guide
Best for ages 7 and up. Rated PG for mild action and rude humor.
A charming, funny family film that suits kids from about 7, about a polite bear from Peru who comes to London looking for a home. Early on, an earthquake wrecks his jungle home and kills the uncle who raised him, off screen. The villain is a museum taxidermist who hunts Paddington with tranquilizer darts, kidnaps him and plans to stuff him, which can frighten younger kids. Expect slapstick mayhem, a housekeeper getting a guard drunk, a dad disguised as a cleaning lady, and mild insults. The menacing villain and the loss are why we suggest 7.
What's in it
Violence
MildMostly slapstick: a flooded bathroom, a gas-oven blast, a pigeon attack. The villain slaps a coworker, hangs a man upside down to make him talk and then drops him, still tied, into the river, and threatens Paddington with darts, a scalpel and a furnace.
Language
MildNo real profanity. Insults like dung breath and 'shut your pie hole,' plus good lord, for God's sake and an exclamatory 'God!' A background poster reads 'Damned by Despair.'
Sex and nudity
MildInnuendo only. Mr. Brown dresses as a cleaning lady and a guard flirts with him, a teen talks about her boyfriend, adults use words like hot and sexy, and a married couple share a passionate kiss.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateMrs. Bird plays a drinking game with a museum guard, matching him shot for shot until both are drunk, to distract him. An elderly man has a glass of wine, and Paddington is knocked out by a tranquilizer dart.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateAn earthquake destroys Paddington's home and his uncle dies, leaving him clutching the uncle's hat. The taxidermist stalks him across London, drugs him and prepares to stuff him, and a hunter points a rifle at the bears in the opening.

Worth talking about
Paddington arrives as a stranger, and some neighbors treat him with suspicion. How do people decide who belongs, and what makes a place feel like home?
