Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom: parents' guide
Best for ages 5 and up. Rated PG for mild scary action.
A gentle, dialogue-light Halloween comedy that works even for young kids who enjoy a little spooky fun. Shaun's potion for growing pumpkins ends up on the Farmer, who turns into a shaggy, Bigfoot-like creature that the whole village sets out to catch. The scares are mild and played for laughs: tranquilizer darts, a giant pumpkin that seems to swallow a character, and monster costumes in shop windows. There's no profanity and only some underwear humor. Age 5 reflects the brief spooky moments and the mob hunting the 'beast,' which may unsettle very sensitive viewers.
What's in it
Violence
MildSlapstick only: characters step on rakes, tumble off speeding vehicles and are knocked out by tranquilizer darts. A mob carries pitchforks, a chainsaw appears, and a cleaver wound and 'blood' turn out to be fake. No one is seriously hurt.
Language
NoneNo profanity. The only things a parent might notice are 'OMG' typed in a text message and a comic bit about a dog disposing of waste.
Sex and nudity
MildThe Farmer is seen shirtless and in his underpants, a hazy naked image of him rises from a smelly sock, and he and the town vet share a shy crush that neither acts on.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
NoneNone. Sheep are given medicine at the vet and a cocktail shaker is used to mix a potion, but nobody drinks, smokes or uses drugs.
Scary or intense scenes
MildHalloween imagery throughout, including a Grim Reaper and Dracula in a shop window, eerie howling at night and a hunt for the beast in the woods. The transformed Farmer may startle very young kids, but every scare ends in a joke.
