Coyote vs. Acme: parents' guide

7+our pick

Best for ages 7 and up. Rated PG for cartoon violence and some language.

A goofy mix of live action and animation that suits families who grew up on Looney Tunes slapstick. Wile E. Coyote hires a struggling human lawyer to sue the Acme Corporation over its faulty gadgets, and the case grows into a fight against a corporate cover-up. Expect nonstop cartoon mayhem, with falls off cliffs, explosions and characters squashed flat, but no lasting harm. A handful of mild words, running jokes about posing without pants, and a few innuendos aimed at grown-ups round it out. Age 7 fits kids who understand that cartoon violence isn't real.

What's in it

Violence

Mild

Constant cartoon slapstick: Coyote falls off cliffs, is hit by a truck and a train, gets blown up and flattened, and loses teeth. Tweety is squeezed hard, a knife is waved as a threat, and bombs and rockets are everywhere. No lasting injuries.

Language

Mild

A couple each of 'damn' and 'hell,' one 'piss,' 'frickin',' and a few uses of 'oh my God' or 'Jesus.' A curse word hides in the Road Runner's mock Latin name on screen, a rude gesture is pixelated, and a censored hip-hop song plays.

Sex and nudity

Mild

Running gags about Coyote wearing no clothes and a painter who wants Kevin to pose without pants, a widow's joke that her husband ran off with his secretary, and a chicken judge's suggestive egg line. A featherless duck is briefly shown 'naked.'

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Mild

Coyote swigs from a jug marked XXX and turns green, a cartoon character carries champagne, and a bottle of bubbly turns out to be sarsaparilla. No drug use.

Scary or intense scenes

Mild

Little that is truly scary. Some kids may be bothered by Coyote crawling from a bomb crater badly hurt, a secret program that tests products on unsuspecting cartoons, and a cartoon character held in a mental health facility.

Worth talking about

Coyote keeps trying no matter how often he fails. Talk about when persistence pays off and when it makes more sense to change the plan.
