A Minecraft Movie: parents' guide

8+our pick

Best for ages 8 and up. Rated PG for violence/action, language, suggestive/rude humor and some scary images.

A loud, silly video-game adventure aimed at Minecraft-loving kids, with humor that leans crude. Four misfits tumble through a portal into the blocky Overworld and team up with Steve to fight piglin armies and nighttime zombies. Action is constant but bloodless: defeated creatures turn into pork chops. Expect butt and bathroom jokes, 'dumbass,' 'hell' and 'crap,' and a running gag about a vice principal's romance with a villager that hints they slept together. A teen is picked on at his new school, and his mother's death is mentioned as backstory. Fine for most kids 8 and up.

What's in it

Violence

Mild

Plenty of video-game combat: swords, explosions, fireballs and armies of pig-like warriors beating villagers. Creatures are stabbed, smashed or blown up and vanish into pork chops; a few lose arms, and the villain kills one of her own piglins for drawing a picture. No blood.

Language

Mild

Frequent insults and mild words: several 'hell,' 'crap,' 'bullcrap,' 'ass,' a 'dumbass,' 'frickin',' 'screw it,' and lots of butt jokes like 'Captain Buttcrack.' God's name is used as an exclamation several times.

Sex and nudity

Mild

The vice principal overshares about her divorce, flirts with Garrett, takes a villager to dinner and invites him back for 'dessert,' implying they hooked up, then announces they're engaged. Also a joke about a 'man sandwich.'

Drinking, drugs and smoking

None

No drinking, smoking or drug use.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Zombies attack after dark, Endermen appear, and an orc-like Great Hog and armies of piglins menace the heroes while creepers explode. These are short scary bursts rather than lingering dread, but they can startle young kids.
