Zootopia 2: parents' guide

8+our pick

Best for ages 8 and up. Rated PG for action/violence and rude humor.

A busy, funny buddy-cop sequel for school-age kids and up, in which Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde chase a mysterious snake through the city and uncover a powerful family's secret. The action is frequent and tense: chases, a near-drowning, venom attacks, a house set on fire to silence witnesses, and villains who order others killed. Romance between Judy and Nick is only hinted at, and grown-up jokes and nods to R-rated movies will sail over younger kids' heads. There's some social drinking. The intense peril is why we suggest 8.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Car, boat and tube chases, punches and frying-pan blows, and dart guns. A snake's fang accidentally pierces the police chief, his venom is later used as a weapon that leaves victims paralyzed, a house is torched to get rid of witnesses, and two deaths appear in a flashback.

Language

Mild

Mild: heck, dang, butt, butthead, dirtbag, 'you suck,' a couple of misuses of God's name, and the stand-in 'what the pork.' Repeated jokes play on the animal name dik-dik.

Sex and nudity

Mild

Judy and Nick's partnership hints at romance, especially when they pose undercover as a married couple. Grandma urges Judy to make babies, a sheep's wool is sheared into a bra shape, dancers wear skimpy outfits, and two quick jokes allude to threesomes.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Mild

Animals sip champagne and cocktails at a gala and drink in a dive bar, where a few background characters seem tipsy. Catnip is treated as contraband in a passing joke.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Judy nearly drowns, a dart gun loaded with lethal darts fires by accident, and villains plot murders. A sheep in a glass cell and a lynx lost in a hedge maze spoof horror films. The venom and fire scenes are tense for younger kids.

Worth talking about

Reptiles in the city are feared because of a story that turns out to be false. How do stories passed down shape who we trust, and how can we check them?
