Toy Story 5: parents' guide

6+our pick

Best for ages 6 and up. Rated PG for some thematic elements and rude humor.

A sweet, funny family movie that fits kids from about 6, as the toys compete with a new tablet for Bonnie's attention. Peril is light and mostly slapstick: chases, a pursuit of a donation truck, a squad of Buzz toys who think they're on a real mission, and a pig that nearly gobbles some toys. The bigger issues are emotional: girls from her dance class mock Bonnie in a group chat for still playing with toys, and Jessie faces old fears of being abandoned. Potty jokes from a toilet-training toy and a few near-curses round it out. The cyberbullying and sad moments are why we say 6.

What's in it

Violence

Mild

Slapstick only. Toys leap from windows and moving vehicles, tackle each other, and arm themselves with kitchen utensils they never use. A stranded toy nearly gets eaten by a squirrel, and a big pig almost eats others. No injuries.

Language

Mild

No real swearing. Expect darn, jeez, stupid, losers and shut up, plus potty humor from a toilet-training toy, a 'flush me' gag and a line about wiping your... that gets cut off.

Sex and nudity

None

Nothing beyond kisses: toy couples share pecks, Bonnie stages pretend weddings, and Buzz tries to propose to Jessie. No nudity or innuendo.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

None

No drinking, smoking or drugs. The closest thing is a gag where gadgets with dying batteries slur and stagger until they get fresh ones.

Scary or intense scenes

Mild

Brief peril during rescues and chases, and toys are lost, damaged or nearly thrown away. Sad moments include Bonnie pushing her toys aside, Jessie revisiting her first owner's home, and a farewell between longtime friends.

Sensitive topics

  • Bullying

Worth talking about

Bonnie's tablet pulls her away from play and exposes her to mean messages from other kids. How much screen time feels right, and what should a kid do if a group chat turns cruel?
