E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial: parents' guide

8+our pick

Best for ages 8 and up. Rated PG for language and mild thematic elements.

A classic, heartfelt adventure that many families share with kids around 8, though younger ones may be shaken by its darker stretches. A lonely boy hides a stranded alien and races to get him home before government agents take him away. Scary moments include figures with flashlights hunting E.T. in the dark, agents in sealed suits taking over the family's house, and E.T. turning pale and appearing to die. Language is stronger than many expect, with two s-words, a son of a bitch and the 'penis breath' insult, and E.T. gets drunk on beer. The swearing and the intense illness scenes are why we suggest 8.

What's in it

Violence

Mild

Little actual violence. Government agents and police with guns pursue the kids, Halloween pranks include setting fires and egging cars, and one costume shows a fake knife through a head. No one is hurt on screen.

Language

Moderate

Two s-words, plus damn, son of a bitch, several 'oh my God' exclamations and crude name-calling such as 'penis breath.' A reading of Peter Pan includes the slur 'redskin.'

Sex and nudity

None

Nothing beyond one kiss: feeling E.T.'s emotions, Elliott suddenly grabs a classmate and kisses her during a frog-dissection class. Brothers trade crude anatomy insults, but there's no nudity.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

E.T. drinks several cans of beer while home alone and gets drunk, which makes Elliott act tipsy at school through their link. Some of Michael's teenage friends smoke cigarettes, and beer cans are prominently shown.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Opens with E.T. chased through dark woods by men with flashlights. Agents in spacesuits seal off the house, and E.T. and Elliott fall gravely ill in a long medical scene in which E.T. turns white and seems to die, which upsets many kids.

Worth talking about

Elliott hides E.T. from the adults around him because he doesn't trust them. When is keeping a secret the right call, and when should kids bring in a grown-up?
