Spirited Away: parents' guide
Best for ages 8 and up. Rated PG for some scary moments.
A gorgeous, eerie fantasy for families with kids around 8 and up who can handle a strange, unsettling mood. Ten-year-old Chihiro watches her parents turn into pigs and must work in a bathhouse for spirits to free them. There is no profanity or romance, but the film is packed with grotesque creatures, a masked spirit who swallows workers whole on a rampage, a witch who smokes and breathes fire, and a dragon who is torn up and bleeds from the mouth. Long stretches feel ominous, and Chihiro is often alone and frightened. The creepy imagery and sustained tension are why we suggest 8.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateSwarms of paper spirits slash at Haku in dragon form, and he crashes through the bathhouse bleeding from his wounds and mouth. No-Face gulps down a frog and two workers on a rampage, later spitting them out alive. A witch's paper double is cut in two.
Language
NoneNo profanity in the English dub. Yubaba and the bathhouse staff call Chihiro names like stupid, idiot, crybaby and weakling, mild words such as butt and jerk turn up, and one character threatens to rip a girl's mouth.
Sex and nudity
MildNo romance beyond Chihiro's close bond with Haku, the boy who helps her. A giant baby's bare bottom is briefly seen, and a song the workers sing to a rich guest has mildly suggestive lyrics that will pass over kids' heads.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateYubaba lights cigarettes by magic and exhales thick clouds of smoke, a frog worker puffs on one, and another character's ashtray is overflowing. Sake is offered to a guest. Nobody is shown drunk or using drugs.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateUnsettling from early on: Chihiro's parents stuff themselves and turn into pigs, leaving her alone among spirits. Shadowy ghost figures, a sludge-covered river spirit, a vomiting No-Face, and Yubaba's huge head and fiery rages can scare young kids.
Worth talking about
Chihiro succeeds through courage and kindness rather than strength, and she turns down the gold others grab for. Why does greed cause so much trouble in the bathhouse?
