The Princess Bride: parents' guide

8+our pick

Best for ages 8 and up. Rated PG.

A witty fairy-tale adventure the whole family can quote, framed as a grandfather reading a book to his sick grandson. The humor softens a lot of swordplay and peril: duels with some blood, a man poisoned, giant rats in a fire swamp, shrieking eels, and a torture machine that leaves the hero apparently dead. One hero is out to avenge his murdered father and is shown badly drunk, and the heroine briefly holds a dagger to her chest rather than marry the prince. Language is mild, topping out at "son of a bitch." Fine for most kids 8 and up; the torture scene and the rodents can rattle younger ones.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Sword duels and brawls with stabbings, some blood on wounds and shirts, and several deaths, mostly played for laughs. A man dies from poisoned wine, a giant rat is stabbed, and the hero screams on a torture machine until he appears dead.

Language

Mild

Mild overall: "son of a bitch," "bastard," "arse," a few uses of "God," and one "Jesus" said by the boy, plus colorful name-calling such as "warthog-faced buffoon" and "vomitous mass."

Sex and nudity

Mild

Several long romantic kisses, one on a bed with both fully clothed. A single line praises the heroine's breasts, the hero is shirtless during torture, and the grandson keeps groaning that it's a "kissing book."

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Inigo is described as a hopeless drunk and is shown badly intoxicated, singing in the street and having to be revived. Adults drink wine, and a battle of wits hinges on a poisoned goblet.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Several scary sequences: an eel attack in dark water, a fire swamp with bursts of flame, quicksand and huge rodents that leap out, and a torture chamber where the hero screams. The storybook frame keeps it from feeling bleak.

Sensitive topics

  • Suicide
  • Death of a parent

Worth talking about

Inigo spends twenty years chasing revenge for his father, then admits he has no idea what to do once he has it. Is revenge ever worth building a life around?
