Freaky Friday (2003): parents' guide

8+our pick

Best for ages 8 and up. Rated PG for mild thematic elements and some language.

A bright, funny body-swap comedy that works for most families with kids 8 and up, in which a stressed therapist mom and her teen daughter trade bodies days before the mom's wedding. Content is mild: words like "hell" and "sucks," awkward moments when each one has to deal with the other's love interest, a quick thong glimpse, and two magical earthquakes. The family is still adjusting to the father's death three years earlier. The Chinese restaurant scenes lean on stereotypes, which is worth a word with kids.

What's in it

Violence

Mild

Light slapstick: a distracted driver causes a minor crash that sets off an airbag, volleyballs are spiked at heads, and a boy gets knocked into a tree. No one is hurt.

Language

Mild

Mild: "hell," "screwed," "sucks" used often, "fart," "harlot" and "insane psycho freak," plus a handful of "oh my God" exclamations.

Sex and nudity

Mild

Kisses, some lingering. The swap creates awkward romance: the daughter's crush is drawn to the mom, who has the daughter's mind inside, and gives her a motorcycle ride. Brief shots of a thong and a man's backside.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Mild

Adults drink champagne and wine at a rehearsal dinner and a wedding. No one gets drunk, and nothing else appears.

Scary or intense scenes

Mild

Two magical earthquakes rattle a restaurant and a dinner when the swap happens and reverses, and a spiteful teacher and a rival classmate make the daughter's life hard. Nothing truly scary.

Sensitive topics

  • Death of a parent
