Gravity Falls: parents' guide
Best for ages 8 and up. Rated TV-Y7.
A smart, funny mystery series that families with kids 8 and up can enjoy together, though it grows darker as it goes. Twins Dipper and Mabel spend the summer with their con-artist great-uncle in an Oregon town full of monsters, ghosts and secrets. Episodes mix slapstick and jokes aimed at adults with genuinely creepy creatures, and season 2 builds to a multi-part finale in which a demon turns the town into a nightmare and the kids face real danger. There is no swearing, sexual content or drinking. Age 8 reflects the spooky imagery and scary villains, especially late in the run.
What's in it
Violence
MildFantasy and slapstick action: monster attacks, gnome swarms, zombies, falls, crashes and magical fights, with injuries rarely shown. In season 2 a demon takes over Dipper's body and gleefully hurts it, and the finale's battles are bigger and more intense.
Language
NoneNo profanity. The strongest words are 'heck' and 'butt,' along with playful insults and name-calling.
Sex and nudity
MildCrushes are a running thread: Mabel flirts with every cute boy, Dipper pines for an older teen girl, and a creepy kid villain is fixated on Mabel. Grunkle Stan undresses on TV for a gag, hidden below the waist by a podium, and some jokes sail over kids' heads.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
MildNothing real. In one season 1 episode Mabel eats a pile of a strange candy called Smile Dip and hallucinates wildly, a gag that plays like a drug parody. Otherwise no drinking or smoking of note.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateCreepy monsters in most episodes, from zombies and a shape-shifter to a candy-eating Halloween creature. Season 2 is darker: a one-eyed dream demon possesses people, and the finale shows townspeople turned to stone and stacked into a throne.
Worth talking about
Grunkle Stan lies and cons tourists yet clearly loves the twins. Ask your kid whether someone can be a good family member and a bad role model at the same time.
