The Ghost and Molly McGee: parents' guide

7+our pick

Best for ages 7 and up. Rated TV-Y7.

A bright, upbeat Disney Channel comedy that suits kids about 7 and up, with a Halloween flavor all year round. Cheerful 13-year-old Molly gets bound by a curse to Scratch, a grumpy ghost whose job is spreading misery, and the two become unlikely best friends. Ghosts morph into scary faces, possess bodies and fear banishment to a ghost prison, which could spook preschoolers, but injuries are slapstick and never last. There is no profanity, romance or drinking. Middle school social drama, including a mean girl and a teacher who shrugs off bullying, gives families plenty to talk about.

What's in it

Violence

Mild

Slapstick only: characters bump, fall and get hit by flying objects, and ghosts levitate people with their powers. Nobody stays hurt.

Language

None

No cursing. The ghosts toss around mild insults like 'jerk' and 'stupid,' and one line compares something to poop.

Sex and nudity

None

No romance or sexual content. The closest thing is a gag about the legless ghost wondering whether he needs pants and covering himself after leaving a bathroom.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

None

No drinking, smoking or drug use is shown or noted by reviewers in either season.

Scary or intense scenes

Mild

Ghosts put on their most terrifying faces, one slips into an unconscious girl's body, a girl faints from fright, and a grim, reaper-like figure locks failed ghosts in a prison. It is played for laughs, but very young kids may be spooked.

Sensitive topics

  • Bullying

Worth talking about

Molly meets every problem with relentless cheer, while Scratch expects the worst. Talk about healthy ways to handle sad or angry feelings instead of covering them up.
