Encanto: parents' guide
Best for ages 6 and up. Rated PG for some thematic elements and mild peril.
A colorful, song-packed Disney musical for most families with kids 6 and up, about a Colombian girl who is the only member of her magical family without a special gift. Peril is mild: the family's enchanted house cracks and collapses, and Mirabel dangles over a gorge. The heaviest moment is a flashback in which horsemen attack fleeing villagers and her grandfather is cut down while her grandmother clutches their newborn triplets; the blow itself isn't shown. Otherwise content stays light, with no profanity and only married couples kissing. The grandfather's death and the family tension are why we suggest 6.
What's in it
Violence
MildIn a flashback, riders burn villagers' homes and the grandfather is struck down with a sword just out of view. Otherwise it's slapstick: a suitor's nose gets bopped, a bee sting swells a face, and donkeys get knocked around.
Language
NoneNo profanity. One "jeez" and some sibling name-calling, such as Mirabel calling her sister "stupid perfect."
Sex and nudity
NoneA couple kiss at their wedding and dance and embrace in flashbacks, and a young man is expected to propose to Mirabel's sister. No nudity or innuendo.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
MildAdults raise glasses at a party, and Abuela quips that the drinks are as strong as the magic. A little boy sneaks coffee he's told is for grown-ups. No drunkenness or smoking.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateThe grandfather's death flashback is short but sad, and the collapsing house nearly crushes Mirabel. She is trapped in a dark cave as sand pours in, Uncle Bruno seems spooky at first, and family fights and Abuela's harsh words may upset sensitive kids.
Sensitive topics
- Death of a parent
Worth talking about
Abuela's fear of losing everything pushes her to demand perfection from her family. How can pressure to be the gifted one, or the dependable one, wear people down?
