Cool Runnings: parents' guide

8+our pick

Best for ages 8 and up. Rated PG for mild language and brief violence.

A feel-good, loosely fact-based comedy about Jamaica's first Olympic bobsled team, an easy pick for families with kids about 8 and up. The underdog story stresses hard work, teamwork and integrity. Content is mild: a short, cartoonish bar fight with bottles broken over heads, a pushcart crash, and a fast, jarring sled crash at the Olympics in which no one is badly hurt. Swearing is occasional and mostly mild, though 'a--hole' and 'badass' slip in. Adults drink beer, and the team faces snobbery and prejudice from some rival athletes.

What's in it

Violence

Mild

A brief slapstick bar brawl with bottles smashed over heads, a pushcart that plows into a shack, and several bobsled crashes, some in newsreel footage. Nobody is seriously hurt on screen.

Language

Mild

Infrequent and mostly mild: 'hell,' 'damn,' 'crap,' and 'God' and 'Jesus Christ' as exclamations, plus a stronger 'a--hole' and 'badass.' Movieguide counted nine mild obscenities and one profanity.

Sex and nudity

Mild

A lingering kiss at a kissing booth, a jealous girlfriend played for laughs, a few crude jokes, and a line about admiring someone's backside. Nothing more.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Mild

Adults drink beer in bars and on the beach. The team toasts with soda instead of alcohol.

Scary or intense scenes

Mild

The big Olympic crash is fast and loud, and a newsreel headline mentions a bobsledder killed in a crash, but the team climbs out unhurt.
