Sports Movies Even Non-Fans Love
You don't need to know the offside rule for any of these. The best sports movies use the game as a pressure cooker for something else: ambition, a family, a friendship, a town that badly needs a win. Every pick below works for someone who has never watched the sport, and several work better that way.
They split into two kinds, and it's worth knowing which you're in the mood for. Some are underdog stories, where the result is the reward: Rocky, Cool Runnings, Eddie the Eagle. Others are stories about the cost, where winning is the problem: The Iron Claw, I, Tonya, Marty Supreme. A third, smaller group barely shows the game at all. Moneyball and Air happen mostly in offices and phone calls, and still play like a championship final.
For a mixed-age room with kids about ten and up, start with Remember the Titans, A League of Their Own or Cool Runnings; Eddie the Eagle suits young teens. Challengers, Air and Marty Supreme are adult films with a lot of swearing, and The Iron Claw is the saddest thing here by a distance. Many of these are true stories; for more, see Movies Based on True Stories, and for nights with the kids, Family Movie Night Picks.
Rocky
Movie · 1976The template every underdog film since has borrowed from, and still the best version of it. Most of the running time is a lonely man in a cold Philadelphia winter rather than boxing, which is exactly why the final fight lands so hard. Rated PG, with some rough 1976 language.
Ford v Ferrari
Movie · 2019Two and a half hours that move like ninety minutes. Matt Damon and Christian Bale build a car to beat Ferrari at Le Mans in 1966, and the real opponent turns out to be Ford's own executives. The races are loud, clear and easy to follow if you've never watched motorsport.
Remember the Titans
Movie · 2000The family pick adults don't mind sitting through. Denzel Washington coaches a newly integrated Virginia high-school team in 1971, and the story is about teammates learning to trust each other more than about winning. Rated PG and best from about ten; the racism it depicts is blunt enough to prompt questions.
Challengers
Movie · 2024A tennis film that is really a love triangle across thirteen years, told out of order and scored like a nightclub. Zendaya, Josh O'Connor and Mike Faist are all excellent, and the final match is shot so wildly you'll forget you don't follow tennis. Rated R for sexual content, nudity and constant swearing.
Moneyball
Movie · 2011A baseball movie with very little baseball in it. Brad Pitt plays a general manager with no money who uses statistics to compete with rich teams, and a script co-written by Aaron Sorkin makes arguments in an office as gripping as any ninth inning.
The Iron Claw
Movie · 2023The saddest film on this list, and one of the best. The true story of the Von Erich wrestling brothers and the father who pushed them, with Zac Efron giving the performance of his career. Wrestling fans already know what happens; everyone else should go in prepared for grief.
King Richard
Movie · 2021Will Smith won his Oscar as Richard Williams, the father who planned Venus and Serena's careers before they were born. It's warm and funny, and honest that his stubbornness was both the gift and the problem. Rated PG-13 for a beating, a fatal shooting and some strong language, so better from about thirteen.
F1
Movie · 2025Brad Pitt as a veteran driver returning to Formula One to rescue a failing team and mentor its rookie. The plot is familiar; the point is the racing, filmed at real Grand Prix weekends by the director of Top Gun: Maverick, and it's thunderous. The broadest crowd-pleaser here for a room of adults.
Creed
Movie · 2015A sequel that works even if you've never seen Rocky, though it's richer if you have. Michael B. Jordan plays Apollo Creed's son, Sylvester Stallone is quietly wonderful as the older Rocky, and one early fight is filmed in a single unbroken take. Ryan Coogler directed it before Black Panther.
Marty Supreme
Movie · 2025Timothée Chalamet as a fast-talking 1950s New York hustler who is certain he'll be the world's table tennis champion. Josh Safdie's film moves like a panic attack, funny and exhausting in equal measure, and is loosely inspired by the real player Marty Reisman. Lots of swearing; for adults.
Air
Movie · 2023The story of Nike signing a rookie Michael Jordan, told almost entirely through meetings and phone calls. It shouldn't be exciting and it is. Matt Damon and Viola Davis carry it, Ben Affleck directs, and Jordan's face is never shown. Heavy swearing, nothing else to flag.
I, Tonya
Movie · 2017Tonya Harding's story told as a bitter, funny mockumentary, with characters turning to the camera to dispute what you've just seen. Margot Robbie is superb and Allison Janney won an Oscar as her mother. The domestic violence is shown bluntly, and the comedy doesn't soften it.
Free Solo
Movie · 2018A documentary about climbing El Capitan without ropes, and the most physically stressful film here because none of it is acted. You don't need to care about climbing. You'll care about Alex Honnold, and about the friends filming him who are terrified of watching him fall.
A League of Their Own
Movie · 1992The women's professional baseball league that started in 1943 while the men were at war, with Geena Davis, Madonna and Tom Hanks as their drunk, reluctant manager. Funny and generous, with some swearing and a lot of drinking. Rated PG, and one of the few sports films grandparents and ten-year-olds both pick.
Cool Runnings
Movie · 1993Jamaica's first bobsled team at the 1988 Winter Olympics, played for big, warm laughs with John Candy as their washed-up coach. It takes plenty of liberties with what really happened, but as a Friday-night film for kids from about eight it's hard to beat. Rated PG.
Eddie the Eagle
Movie · 2016Britain's lovable long-shot ski jumper at the same 1988 Games as Cool Runnings, which makes them a natural double bill. Taron Egerton is Eddie and Hugh Jackman plays an invented coach. An unapologetic crowd-pleaser; the PG-13 is for crude sex jokes, a sauna full of naked men and heavy drinking.
Bend It Like Beckham
Movie · 2002A British-Indian teenager in London wants to play soccer while her family wants anything else, with Parminder Nagra and Keira Knightley. Funny, warm, and still fresh. The PG-13 is for language and some sexual content; most families with kids about thirteen and up will be fine.
Battle of the Sexes
Movie · 2017Billie Jean King against Bobby Riggs in 1973, a televised spectacle with Emma Stone and Steve Carell. The match is the hook; the real story is King quietly falling in love with a woman while carrying a whole movement. More romance than sport, and lovely for it.
Nyad
Movie · 2023Annette Bening as Diana Nyad, attempting the swim from Cuba to Florida in her sixties, with Jodie Foster as the friend and coach who keeps her going. Both were Oscar-nominated. It's a film about stubbornness more than sport, from the directors of Free Solo, and the ocean scenes show it.
