Sci-Fi Movies Worth Your Evening
Science fiction at its best does two things at once: it shows you something you've never seen, and makes you think about something you have. These are the films that justify a whole evening, whether that's a vast epic for the biggest screen in the house or a low-budget puzzle that's over before bedtime.
The split worth knowing is spectacle versus idea. Dune, Blade Runner 2049 and Interstellar want the loudest speakers you own. Coherence, The Vast of Night and Ex Machina are a handful of people in a room, and work fine on a laptop. The Martian and Project Hail Mary, both adapted from Andy Weir novels, sit in between: crowd-pleasing problem-solving with real science under the jokes, and the easiest picks for a group that doesn't usually watch sci-fi.
Check the clock before starting: Interstellar, Dune, Blade Runner 2049 and Project Hail Mary all run past two and a half hours. Alien, Annihilation and Nope cross into horror. For a mixed room, The Wild Robot works from about eight and Back to the Future from about 12. If you'd rather commit to a series, see Sci-Fi and Fantasy Series; for twistier picks, Mind-Bending Movies & Shows.
The Martian
Movie · 2015The most purely enjoyable film here. Matt Damon is stranded on Mars and has to science his way to staying alive, and the result is a survival story built mostly from jokes and problem-solving. Long but brisk, with some swearing, and a good pick for teenagers who think sci-fi is boring.
Arrival
Movie · 2016The best first-contact film in years, and the rare sci-fi hit whose hero is a linguist. Amy Adams has to work out how to talk to visitors whose writing doesn't run in a line. Quiet, sad and very clever; go in knowing as little as possible.
Dune (2021)
Movie · 2021Denis Villeneuve's version of the desert-planet epic is the most physically enormous film on this list: sandworms, vast ships, a score you feel in your chest. It covers only the first half of the novel and stops mid-story, so plan on Dune: Part Two, from 2024, which finishes the job.
Project Hail Mary
Movie · 2026The big crowd-pleaser of 2026. Ryan Gosling wakes alone on a spaceship with no memory of how he got there, and the film turns into an unlikely buddy movie you should know nothing more about. From the author of The Martian, with the same joy in problem-solving. Long, at over two and a half hours.
Everything Everywhere All at Once
Movie · 2022The most inventive sci-fi idea of the decade, put to the most ordinary use: a laundromat owner learns she can borrow skills from her other lives across the multiverse. Michelle Yeoh fights with whatever is nearest, and the film keeps getting stranger. Sci-fi for people who think they don't like sci-fi.
Blade Runner 2049
Movie · 2017A sequel far better than it had any right to be. Ryan Gosling's replicant detective uncovers a secret that leads him to Harrison Ford's Deckard, and every frame of Roger Deakins's photography could hang on a wall. Slow, very long and best on a big screen, with frequent nudity and bloody violence.
Inception
Movie · 2010Sci-fi as a heist: a crew that steals secrets from inside dreams takes a job that means going several dreams deep. Christopher Nolan explains the rules carefully, then sets them all running at once. The best pick here for a group that wants spectacle and something to argue about afterward.
The Matrix
Movie · 1999Still the template for half the action sci-fi made since. Keanu Reeves learns that the world is a simulation, then learns kung fu. The ideas are laid out clearly enough for a first-timer, and its bullet-time effects set the visual style for a decade. Stop after the first if you're not hooked.
Back to the Future
Movie · 1985The most perfectly built entertainment here, and the family pick once kids are about 12. Marty McFly is sent back to 1955 in a DeLorean and accidentally gets between his future parents. Every setup pays off. Rated PG in 1985, but expect some language, a mother-son crush plot and an attempted sexual assault in a parked car.
Alien
Movie · 1979The film that proved sci-fi could be a horror movie. A working crew answers a distress call, brings something back aboard, and has nowhere to run. Sigourney Weaver's Ripley is still the model for the competent hero. Deliberately slow by modern standards, and properly frightening once it starts.
Interstellar
Movie · 2014Matthew McConaughey leaves his daughter on a dying Earth to search for a new home through a wormhole. Christopher Nolan's biggest swing pairs serious physics with a father-daughter story that reduces grown adults to tears. Close to three hours and very loud; the organ score is half the experience.
Nope
Movie · 2022Jordan Peele's UFO movie, about a brother and sister who supply horses to Hollywood productions and spot something lurking in the clouds over their California ranch. Part western, part creature feature, and a sharp joke about our need to film everything. One flashback is genuinely disturbing, so know your audience.
Ex Machina
Movie · 2014Two men and a robot in a remote glass house. A young programmer is invited to test whether an AI called Ava is truly conscious, and the film keeps shifting who is testing whom. Alex Garland's debut is lean and cold, with frequent nudity, and feels more relevant every year.
Annihilation
Movie · 2018Natalie Portman's biologist joins an all-woman expedition into the Shimmer, a zone where nature is mutating into something beautiful and wrong. Alex Garland's follow-up to Ex Machina is stranger and scarier, and a scene with a mutated bear is pure nightmare fuel. It ends on questions rather than answers.
Children of Men
Movie · 2006A near future in which no child has been born for years, and a burned-out bureaucrat, Clive Owen, has to get one precious person to safety. Alfonso Cuarón shoots the big set pieces in long, unbroken takes that leave you breathless. Bleak, violent, and the most frighteningly plausible film here.
Prey
Movie · 2022A Predator film set on the Great Plains three centuries ago, with Amber Midthunder as a young Comanche woman set on proving herself as a hunter. Lean and smart, it's the best of the series since the original. There's a full Comanche-language dub that's worth choosing. Bloody and often gory.
The Wild Robot
Movie · 2024A robot is shipwrecked on an island with no humans, adopts an orphaned gosling and slowly learns what it means to care for something. Painterly, funny and genuinely moving, it's the sci-fi pick for a room with kids in it, from about eight. Bring tissues for the adults; the migration sequence is a high point.
Companion
Movie · 2025A weekend at a remote lake house with friends goes very wrong, and that's all you should know. Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid lead a sharp, darkly funny thriller about what some men want from a relationship. Short, nasty in places and full of good turns: one of 2025's best surprises.
Coherence
Movie · 2013Eight friends at a dinner party, a comet passing overhead, and then the power goes out. What follows is a mind-twister made for almost nothing, with much of the dialogue improvised. Under ninety minutes, and it rewards close attention: watch it with someone who likes to argue about what happened.
The Vast of Night
Movie · 2019A lesser-known gem: a switchboard operator and a radio DJ in a 1950s New Mexico town pick up a strange signal one night. It's almost all talk, filmed in long, gliding takes, and it builds an old-fashioned eeriness out of voices on a line. Made on a small budget, and under ninety minutes.
