Annihilation: parents' guide

16+our pick

Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for violence, bloody images, language and some sexuality.

A cerebral, deeply unsettling sci-fi horror film for older teens who can handle gore and dread. A biologist joins an all-female expedition into a mysterious zone where plants, animals and people mutate. Expect a few shocking, bloody creature attacks, video of a man's stomach being cut open, about a dozen f-words, and a brief affair scene with a glimpse of side nudity. One character kills himself on camera, and another has visible self-harm scars. The creeping, nightmarish mood lasts nearly the whole film, which is why we suggest 16.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Several gory moments: a bear-like creature kills two team members, tearing out one's throat, and a mangled body is shown. Video shows a man's abdomen sliced open with writhing insides. Also shootings, a rifle butt to the face, an alligator attack and a grenade blast.

Language

Strong

Plugged In counted about a dozen f-words and a similar number of s-words; Movieguide counted at least 29 obscenities, mostly f-words. Also "bitch," "damn," "hell" and misuse of Jesus' name.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

Flashbacks show a married couple kissing in bed in their underwear, with sex implied. The lead's affair with a colleague is shown briefly through movement and moaning, with her bare back and part of a breast visible from the side. No graphic nudity.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Mild

Team members drink beer before the mission and a couple shares wine at home. One woman is said to be a recovering addict. The lead is knocked out with an injected sedative, and another woman is given something to help her sleep.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Sustained dread from start to finish. A creature that screams in a dead teammate's voice stalks the group, bodies fuse with plants and fungus, and a mimicking double shadows the lead. Images of mutated corpses and the climax are genuinely disturbing.

Worth talking about

The film suggests people are drawn to self-destruction in many forms, from risky choices to affairs. Ask what each character is running from, and what helps people choose healing instead.
