Dune (2021): parents' guide
Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for sequences of strong violence, some disturbing images and suggestive material.
A slow, grand science-fiction epic for teens who like big imaginary worlds and can sit through two and a half hours. Young Paul Atreides moves with his family to a desert planet that supplies a precious spice, only to face betrayal and invasion. Battles are large and brutal but mostly bloodless, with stabbings, executions and people swallowed by giant sandworms. A parent dies, soldiers threaten to rape a captive woman before she fights back, and a painful test and a grotesque villain may unsettle younger kids. Language and sexual content are light. About 13 and up fits.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateFrequent combat with blades, guns and bombardment, including a long night invasion with a high body count, stabbings, a duel to the death and executions implied by a falling blade. Some bloody hands and swords. Guards threaten to rape a captive woman before she turns the tables and they die.
Language
MildSparse: Plugged In counted one s-word and single uses of 'damn,' 'ass' and 'my God.' No f-words.
Sex and nudity
MildPaul dreams of kissing a young woman, and his parents are seen clothed in bed. A drugged man sits naked with nothing explicit visible, the villain's bare body is shown, and some gowns are sheer. No sex.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateSpice, a mind-altering and addictive substance everyone fights over, drives the plot. Breathing it triggers Paul's visions, and the desert people have blue eyes from long exposure. No alcohol or smoking to speak of.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateA pain test with a poisoned needle held to Paul's neck, giant sandworms swallowing people, a menacing floating villain, chanting soldiers in a bloody ritual, and visions of holy war. A parent's death is shown. The mood is dark throughout.
Sensitive topics
- Death of a parent
Worth talking about
Paul's family is sent to Arrakis as part of a trap set by people more powerful than them. Ask your teen who really controls the spice, and who pays the price for it.
