Arcane: parents' guide
Best for ages 14 and up. Rated TV-14.
A gorgeous, intense animated drama for older teens, not a cartoon for kids. Set in a gleaming city and its polluted undercity, it follows two sisters torn apart after losing their parents. Violence is frequent and bloody, with stabbings, gunfire, an implied decapitation and children among the dead. A drug called Shimmer fuels addiction and monstrous transformations. There are sex scenes with brief partial nudity, f-words in several episodes, drinking and smoking, and a suicide attempt that is stopped. The animation doesn't soften any of it; about 14 and up.
What's in it
Violence
StrongBrutal, bloody fights with fists, blades, guns, a chainsaw and explosives. A decapitation is implied, a needle goes into a man's eye, a child is shot dead, and bodies pile up in battles. Two girls find their parents' corpses.
Language
ModerateStrong words are scattered rather than constant: UK classifiers note a few f-words in about six of 18 episodes, plus s-words, bitch, piss, damn and middle-finger gestures. Many episodes have only mild language.
Sex and nudity
ModerateBoth seasons include sex: a brief scene in season 1 with nudity mostly from behind and a brief side view of a woman's breast, and a season 2 couple who undress, with oral sex hinted. Sex workers appear outside a brothel, and adultery is referenced.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongCharacters drink, smoke and get drunk. A glowing drug called Shimmer is smoked in a club and injected, leaves many undercity residents addicted, and turns some users into monsters.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongMany dark, disturbing scenes: body-horror transformations, a monstrous rat that kills a cat, a creature hunting people, a character's hallucinations and breakdowns, jump scares, and deep grief over parents and children who die.
