Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness: parents' guide
Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, frightening images and some language.
A Marvel adventure that leans hard into horror, best for teens who can handle scary movies. Director Sam Raimi piles on jump scares, a reanimated corpse, skeletal demons, and grisly deaths for several heroes: one crushed, one sliced in half, one whose head implodes. A grieving mother turned villain hunts a teenage girl, and two young boys end up terrified of her. Language tops out at a few s-words, and romance is limited to longing looks. The horror tone, more than any blood, is why we suggest 13 rather than the younger age most Marvel films suit.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateFrequent, often grisly superhero battles with a high body count. Heroes are crushed by a statue, sliced in half and shredded, one's head implodes, others burn to ash or have their necks snapped, and a monster's eye is torn out. Little red blood.
Language
ModeratePlugged In counted three s-words, plus one "goddamn" and scattered "ass," "damn," "hell" and "crap." No f-words. One joke wonders whether Spider-Man shoots webs from his rear.
Sex and nudity
MildStrange still pines for his former girlfriend at her wedding, and they talk about loving each other across universes; only hand-holding and longing looks. Strange is briefly shirtless, and America remembers her two moms being affectionate.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
MildStrange drinks a martini or two at a wedding reception where other guests have champagne, wine and cocktails. No drunkenness, smoking or drug use.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongBuilt like a horror film: jump scares, a dead body raised and controlled, decaying faces, skeletal spirits dragging people toward the underworld, and a nearly unstoppable villain stalking a teenage girl. A flashback shows the girl accidentally losing her two mothers through a portal.
Worth talking about
Wanda believes her grief entitles her to take what she wants, and Strange keeps deciding the ends justify the means. When does a good goal stop excusing the way you reach it?
