The Batman: parents' guide
Best for ages 14 and up. Rated PG-13 for strong violent and disturbing content, drug content, strong language, and some suggestive material.
A long, rain-soaked detective thriller that plays more like a serial-killer film than a superhero movie, best for teens 14 and up. The Riddler's murders are grisly and staged as puzzles: a man bludgeoned and taped, his severed thumb displayed, a victim fitted with a cage of rats, another with a bomb locked to his neck. A young boy finds his father's body. A street drug dropped into the eyes drives the plot, and club patrons use it on screen. Expect one f-word, nearly 20 s-words, and kissing plus a woman undressing to her underwear.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateBrutal and frequent but not very bloody: the mayor is beaten and smothered with tape, a thumb is cut off, a man wears a box of rats meant to eat his face, Batman pummels thugs bloody, and gunmen and a flood threaten a packed arena.
Language
ModeratePlugged In counted one f-word and nearly 20 s-words, plus "b--tard," "pr--k," "a--hole," "son of a bitch" and "goddamn," with Jesus' name misused about 20 times.
Sex and nudity
MildBatman and Catwoman kiss a few times. He watches from outside as she undresses to her underwear, she flirts with and touches a man at a club, and there's brief sex-related talk. Bruce is shirtless at times.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongThe plot centers on "drops," a made-up drug put in the eyes. A drug lab is shown, club patrons use and share it, and addicts appear. Batman injects himself with an adrenaline-like shot. Adults drink.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongDark and oppressive throughout, with horror-style murder scenes, crime-scene photos, a killer's taunting videos, and a woman's killing heard on a recording. A child discovers his murdered father, and grim stories of orphans involve rats and freezing babies.
Sensitive topics
- Death of a parent
Worth talking about
Batman calls himself vengeance, then realizes the Riddler sees him the same way. What's the difference between justice and revenge?
