Andor: parents' guide

14+our pick

Best for ages 14 and up. Rated TV-14.

A grown-up Star Wars spy thriller for teens ready for something far darker than the films. Over two seasons, a thief becomes a rebel while the Empire tightens its grip through prisons, torture and massacres. Blaster violence is frequent and often brutal, a season 2 episode includes an attempted rape, and more than one character takes their own life. Expect a brothel setting, implied sex, a few s-words, heavy drinking and one character's reliance on a sleep drug. It's thoughtful and rewarding, but the darkness puts it at about 14.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Frequent blaster fights, a prison riot on electrified floors, a funeral riot with bombs and stabbings, a man shot point-blank in the head, and a season 2 massacre of civilians. A woman is tortured and later fights off an attempted rape; one man stabs himself.

Language

Moderate

Plugged In lists several s-words plus bastard, ass, damn, hell and pissed, along with subtitled alien curses. Common Sense flagged no profanity in its review, so it is sparse.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

The series opens in a brothel with dancers, and later a couple sits on a bed in underwear; there is a bare back and a shirtless shower scene. A same-sex couple kisses. A teen's arranged marriage drives one storyline.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Strong

Heavy drinking in bars and at a lavish wedding where a major character gets drunk. In season 2 a traumatized woman doses herself with a sleep drug, looks strung out and is warned about withdrawal; another man inhales fumes from a dangerous starship fuel.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Sustained dread: a woman is tortured with recordings of children being killed, prisoners live under lethal threat, and a crowd of civilians is gunned down. Several deaths, including a beloved parent figure, hit hard.

  • Suicide
  • Death of a parent

Worth talking about

Andor shows ordinary people deciding whether and how to resist a cruel government, and what it costs them. Talk about where the rebels cross lines, and whether the ends justify the means.
