Alien: parents' guide
Best for ages 15 and up. Rated R for sci-fi violence/gore and language.
A slow-burning sci-fi horror classic best saved for older teens who can handle one famously gory scene and a lot of suspense. The crew of a cargo spaceship picks up a deadly creature that hunts them one by one. Most deaths happen in shadow or off-screen, but a bloody scene of a creature erupting from a man's chest is still shocking, and the tension barely lets up after the first act. Expect several f-words, smoking, and the heroine in her underwear near the end. Ripley remains a landmark capable female lead.
What's in it
Violence
StrongMost killings are quick or implied, but a creature bursts bloodily from a man's chest at dinner. An android tries to choke a woman by forcing a rolled magazine into her mouth, then has his head knocked off, spewing white fluid.
Language
StrongMultiple f-words plus 's--t,' 'son of a bitch,' 'horses--t,' 'goddamn' and 'hell' from a crew that swears casually. Common Sense Media rates the language among the film's biggest concerns.
Sex and nudity
MildRipley strips to a cropped top and underwear in a non-sexual moment, and pin-up pictures of nude women hang in the background of one area. No sex scenes.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateSeveral crew members smoke cigarettes, mostly early on, and one drinks beer at a meal. No drunkenness or drug use.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongLong, dark stretches of suspense with jump scares, strobing lights, blaring alarms and a creature that strikes from vents and shadows. The chest-bursting scene is one of the most shocking in film history.
Worth talking about
The company treats its crew as expendable. Ask your teen what the film says about who gets to decide whose life is worth risking.
