The Fly (1986): parents' guide
Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R.
David Cronenberg's body-horror classic is a tragic love story wrapped in some of the most stomach-turning makeup effects ever filmed; for older teens. A scientist's teleportation experiment fuses him with a housefly, and his body slowly falls apart. Expect a baboon turned inside out, a man's hand dissolved by acidic vomit, teeth and an ear coming loose, and a nightmare of giving birth to a giant maggot. There's a sex scene showing a man's bare backside and a flash of a breast, infrequent strong language including an f-word, and an unplanned pregnancy that raises the question of abortion. The ending is bleak and violent, so we suggest 16.
What's in it
Violence
StrongGrotesque rather than frequent: a baboon is turned inside out in a failed test, an arm is snapped in an arm-wrestling match, corrosive vomit melts a man's hand and foot, and a mutated man is shot with a shotgun.
Language
ModerateInfrequent, per the BBFC: an f-word, plus s-words, bullshit, chickenshit, a--hole, damn and a crude word for penis.
Sex and nudity
ModerateThe leads have sex in a brief scene that shows the man's bare buttocks as he thrusts, and a woman's breast is glimpsed afterward. The scientist later brings home a woman from a bar, steps naked from his pod, and an ex-boyfriend sexually harasses the heroine.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateAdults drink and smoke cigarettes. The scientist gets drunk and arm-wrestles a stranger in a dive bar. No drug use.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongDisturbing body horror that builds steadily: oozing sores, teeth and fingernails falling out, a man crawling on walls, and a graphic nightmare of giving birth to a maggot. The final transformation and the tragic ending are deeply unsettling.
