Candyman: parents' guide

16+our pick

Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for violence and gore.

A gory, unsettling supernatural horror film with real ideas about race and urban legends, best for older teens. A Chicago graduate student researching a hook-handed figure from local folklore is drawn into a series of brutal killings and blamed for them. Victims are slashed open and left in pools of blood, a dog is beheaded, a baby is kidnapped, and a boy is shown bloodied after a mutilating attack. The villain's backstory is a racist lynching. Language is lighter, but there's brief nudity, near-constant smoking and some drinking. The gore and disturbing images put it at 16.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Candyman stabs and guts victims with a hook, leaving them in large pools of blood. A boy lies bloodied in a public restroom after his genitals are cut, a dog is decapitated, and a woman is badly burned in a bonfire.

Language

Moderate

Profanity is infrequent: words like "asshole," "bitch," "crap" and "hell." A young boy calls a developmentally disabled boy "retard." Language is a minor element compared with the violence.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

Brief non-sexual breast nudity, a kiss between the lead and the title figure, and a flashback in which teens drink and nearly have sex. The lead's husband is having an affair.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

The lead smokes cigarettes in nearly every scene, and others smoke too. Teens drink beer in a flashback, and a husband comes home drunk.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Dreamlike dread throughout: swarms of bees, a menacing figure who appears when his name is said into a mirror, bloody crime scenes, and a fiery climax with a kidnapped baby in danger.

  • Animal death
  • Child abuse

Worth talking about

The legend grows out of a Black man's murder by a white mob. Talk about how the film connects fear and folklore to real racial injustice and neglect in a Chicago housing project.
