The Texas Chain Saw Massacre: parents' guide

16+our pick

Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R.

A raw, influential horror film for older teens who can handle sustained terror. Five young friends driving through rural Texas fall prey to a family of cannibals, including a chainsaw-wielding killer who wears a mask of human skin. Surprisingly little blood is shown, but the brutality is strongly felt: a woman is hung alive on a meat hook, and the final survivor's long ordeal is filled with screaming. Rotting bodies, bones and animal carcasses fill the house. Language is mild and there's no sex. We suggest 16 for the intensity.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Sustained and brutal, though little blood is shown: a sledgehammer killing, a woman hung alive on a meat hook, chainsaw attacks, a hitchhiker slashing with a razor, and a captive's finger cut so a withered old man can suck the blood.

Language

Mild

Mostly mild: several uses of "bitch," "damn," "goddamn" and "hell," plus a single s-word. No f-words are reported.

Sex and nudity

Mild

No sex or nudity. The camera lingers on a young woman in very short shorts and a backless top.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Some characters hold beer bottles, and one appears drunk. No drug use is reported, and drinking plays little part in the story.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Near-constant screaming and terror, especially in the final stretch as a captive is chased, tormented at a nightmarish dinner table and nearly killed. A house filled with bones, corpses and furniture made from remains is deeply disturbing.

Worth talking about

British censors banned the film for years because of its intensity, not its gore. Talk about how sound, editing and suggestion can be more frightening than what is actually shown.
