Inception: parents' guide

13+our pick

Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for sequences of violence and action throughout.

A brainy, twisty sci-fi heist that rewards teens who like puzzles, about a crew that steals and plants ideas inside people's dreams. Action is near constant: gunfights, chases, explosions and fistfights, mostly bloodless, and dying in a dream usually just wakes the sleeper. The emotional core is darker. The hero is haunted by his late wife, whose suicide is shown and central to the plot, and he is cut off from his young children; another character's father is dying. Profanity includes a few s-words, and there is nothing sexual beyond a kiss. Best for 13 and up because of the suicide storyline and the relentless intensity.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Frequent gun battles, car chases, explosions, stabbings and hand-to-hand fights across dream levels. Most of it is bloodless and many deaths only wake the dreamer, but one man coughs up blood and another is shot in the head.

Language

Moderate

Some profanity, though light for an action film: a few s-words including "bullshit," plus "damn," "hell," "ass," "bastard," "bloody," "goddamn" and "Jesus Christ," and one f-word cut off before it's finished.

Sex and nudity

None

No sex or nudity. Two characters share a brief kiss, a few women wear low-cut tops, and the hero's scenes with his late wife are tender rather than physical.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Mild

Adults drink wine, beer and champagne socially. IV sedatives are used to share dreams, and a room of people who come daily to dream hints at dependence, all within the sci-fi premise.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Tense, layered action, a freight train plowing down a city street, a menacing vision of the hero's dead wife, a fall from a high ledge, and the threat of being lost forever in limbo. Grief and guilt run throughout.

Sensitive topics

  • Suicide
  • Death of a parent

Worth talking about

Cobb buries his guilt instead of facing it, and it nearly wrecks everything. Why is it so hard to let go of a loss, and what actually helps?
