Edge of Tomorrow: parents' guide
Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi action and violence, language and brief suggestive material.
A clever, fast-moving sci-fi war movie for teens, about an untested officer who keeps waking up on the same day and dying in the same battle against invading aliens. The hero dies over and over, often shot in the head by his trainer to reset the day, and the beach invasion scenes are loud and chaotic but rarely bloody. Language includes several s-words and one cut-off f-word, and there's a brief bare backside. An important character dies. The intensity, repeated deaths and that f-word make it a better fit at 13 than for younger action fans.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateLong battle sequences in which soldiers are shot, crushed, burned and tossed around by alien creatures, mostly fast and bloodless. The hero dies dozens of times, and his trainer shoots him in the head again and again to restart the day.
Language
ModerateAbout four or five s-words and one f-word that gets cut off, plus a handful each of ass, bitch, bastard and bollocks. God's and Christ's names are used as exclamations, and posters nickname the heroine Full Metal Bitch.
Sex and nudity
MildA soldier's bare backside shows briefly as the troops suit up, men are shirtless in the barracks, and there's one short kiss. The hero hints at a sexual way to share alien blood and is turned down.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
MildOne scene in a bar where adults drink, and the hero has a beer. No drug use or drunkenness reported.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateFast, tentacled aliens attack without warning, a troop aircraft explodes again and again with soldiers inside, and an important character dies in a crash. The hero's endless deaths could unsettle younger viewers.
Worth talking about
Cage only gets better by failing over and over. Talk about something you improved at through practice and mistakes, and how it felt to keep trying.
