Best Thrillers to Watch Tonight
For the nights you want your pulse up. These are the gripping, tightly-wound thrillers — movies and series — that make two hours vanish. Most are from the last ten years, so there's a good chance a few are new to you.
"Thriller" covers a lot of ground, so they're worth separating. Mad Max and Run Lola Run are kinetic — tension from motion. Sicario and Chernobyl are dread — tension from what's coming. Knives Out is a puzzle that happens to be tense, and one of the few here you could comfortably watch with family. The newer picks add a fourth kind, secrets: Conclave, Black Bag and Ripley are tense because somebody in the room is lying.
If it's late and you want something that ends tonight, pick a film. The series below — Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul — are among the best television ever made and will cost you weeks, which is a different decision. Parasite
Movie · 2019The best place to start if you want something you'll still be thinking about tomorrow. A poor family talks its way into a rich family's house, and the con is funny until, about halfway, it suddenly isn't. In Korean with subtitles, and the final act is bloody.
Knives Out
Movie · 2019The most fun and least stressful thriller here. Tension comes from watching the detective work, not from fearing for anyone.
Conclave
Movie · 2024Tension built almost entirely from conversations in corridors. Ralph Fiennes runs the vote for a new pope while scandals surface one cardinal at a time. No chases and barely any violence, which makes it the rare grown-up thriller you could happily watch with a parent or a teenager.
Prisoners
Movie · 2013The bleakest film here. Two little girls disappear on Thanksgiving, and Hugh Jackman's father stops trusting the detective, Jake Gyllenhaal, to find them. It's long, rain-soaked and includes torture that's hard to watch, but the mystery is airtight and the ending lands.
Mad Max: Fury Road
Movie · 2015Essentially one continuous chase. Almost no dialogue, almost no downtime — the purest adrenaline pick on the list.
Sicario
Movie · 2015The most genuinely uncomfortable thing on this list. Dread-soaked, morally bleak, and the border tunnel sequence is a masterclass in sustained tension.
Civil War
Movie · 2024Journalists drive across an America at war with itself, trying to reach Washington. The violence is sudden and very loud, and one roadside scene with Jesse Plemons is among the most frightening of the decade. Less about politics than about what war photographers do to keep going.
Uncut Gems
Movie · 2019Two hours inside a panic attack. Adam Sandler plays a New York jeweler with a gambling problem who keeps doubling down on bets he can't cover. Everyone talks over everyone, the score never lets up, and the swearing is constant. Thrilling, if you can stand it.
One Battle After Another
Movie · 2025Paul Thomas Anderson's big swing. Leonardo DiCaprio is a washed-up former revolutionary who has to find his daughter when an old enemy, played by Sean Penn, comes back for them both. Long, very funny in places, and it ends with a car chase over rolling hills that is pure suspense.
Get Out
Movie · 2017Builds dread out of politeness. The horror is mostly in what people say pleasantly, which makes the release when it comes land hard.
Inception
Movie · 2010Tense in a heist-movie register: the pressure is a countdown across four nested timelines, all resolving at once. Spectacle rather than dread.
Black Bag
Movie · 2025A grown-up spy thriller that's done in about an hour and a half. Michael Fassbender has to find a traitor among a handful of colleagues, and his wife, Cate Blanchett, is one of them. Mostly dinner parties, lie detectors and sharp dialogue, with little action and no wasted scenes.
Run Lola Run
Movie · 1998Eighty minutes at a flat sprint. If you want maximum tension in minimum time, this is the answer.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Movie · 2018Included for pace rather than menace: the action sequences are genuinely thrilling, and it's the one pick here that works for kids about nine and up.
Slow Horses
Series · 2022The funniest thriller here. MI5 dumps its failures in a grim office run by Gary Oldman's Jackson Lamb, a slob who turns out to be the sharpest spy in London. Each season is built around one case, told in six punchy episodes. Lots of swearing.
Ripley
Series · 2024Patience as a form of tension. Andrew Scott's Tom Ripley moves through black-and-white 1960s Italy, lying and improvising, and the camera lingers until you feel complicit. One murder plays out at excruciating length and is unbearable in the best way.
Severance
Series · 2022Corporate-thriller tension rather than physical danger. The threat is institutional, which makes it quietly worse.
Breaking Bad
Series · 2008The long-form option. Its tension is cumulative — five seasons of a man's choices closing off his own exits.
Better Call Saul
Series · 2015Slower and sadder than Breaking Bad, and tenser for it, because you already know where everyone ends up.
The Queen's Gambit
Series · 2020Tension without any physical threat at all: it makes chess matches feel like duels. Seven episodes, complete, no sequel-bait.
Chernobyl
Series · 2019Five episodes of mounting horror at something that actually happened. The most affecting thing on this list and the hardest to shake.
Avatar: The Last Airbender
Series · 2005Animated and made for families, but genuinely tense in its back half: the stakes escalate properly and the finale delivers. Most kids from about eight handle it well.
