Better Call Saul: parents' guide
Best for ages 16 and up. Rated TV-MA.
A slow-burning legal and crime drama, the prequel to Breaking Bad, best for older teens who appreciate character studies. It is less relentlessly violent than its parent show but still has sudden, bloody killings, cartel beatings and two suicides. Language is coarse and frequent. Drug trafficking is central, with some meth and cocaine use shown, and the lead couple's sex life is implied, with brief male rear nudity. AMC aired it as TV-14, but streaming carries TV-MA. Around 16 is a sensible starting point with a parent.
What's in it
Violence
StrongViolence comes in sudden bursts: a drug dealer breaks two young men's legs, people are shot at close range, including a point-blank head shot, a limb is severed, and bodies fill a house after a cartel raid. Bloody moments recur across seasons.
Language
ModerateCoarse language throughout: s-words in most episodes, plus asshole, dick, pussy and bitch, and constant milder words such as damn and hell. F-words are infrequent, turning up in only a handful of episodes, some in Spanish.
Sex and nudity
ModerateThe central couple has sex shown under the covers with movement and sound. A man's bare rear is seen several times, a nude man appears in a locker room with the camera hiding his groin, and sex workers offer their services.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongDrug trafficking is the backbone of the plot, with packages of meth, cocaine and heroin. Characters are shown snorting cocaine and smoking meth, doing tequila shots and liquor, and smoking cigarettes.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongLong stretches of quiet dread broken by shocking deaths, including two suicides, one shown on screen. Cartel threats against innocent people, a panic attack, and a brother's mental illness add to the tension.
