The Jinx: parents' guide

15+our pick

Best for ages 15 and up. Rated TV-MA.

A gripping, unsettling true-crime series for older teens who can handle real murders. It investigates real estate heir Robert Durst, linked to his wife's 1982 disappearance, a friend's shooting death and a neighbor's killing and dismemberment. Expect real crime scene photos of dead bodies and dismembered remains, talk of domestic violence and his mother's suicide, and some strong language. Part One (2015) is rated TV-14; Part Two (2024) is rated TV-MA and adds his murder trial, more images of real bodies with injury detail, and sex and drug references. The real crime images are the main reason we suggest 15.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Real crime scene photos show dead bodies and the dismembered remains of a murder victim; Part Two shows more images of real bodies, with injury detail. Killings, including an execution-style shooting, are discussed in detail, with some reenactments.

Language

Moderate

Strong language turns up in the last two episodes of Part One, bleeped in one of them, and Part Two has swearing in three of its six episodes. It is confined to a handful of episodes rather than constant.

Sex and nudity

Mild

No sex scenes or nudity. One episode of Part Two contains sexual references, which are talked about rather than shown.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

One episode of Part Two includes references to drugs, which are discussed rather than shown. Part One has nothing of note in this area.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Real murders, real victims' families and a subject who comes across as chilling. Disturbing crime images recur, and the final moments of Part One are unnerving. Discussions of his mother's suicide and alleged abuse of his wife.

Sensitive topics

  • Suicide
  • Domestic abuse
  • Death of a parent

Worth talking about

The filmmakers became part of the case they were covering, and some of their editing was later questioned. How should true-crime makers balance telling a gripping story with fairness and accuracy?
