Whiplash: parents' guide
Best for ages 15 and up. Rated R for strong language including some sexual references.
A gripping, high-pressure drama about a young jazz drummer and his abusive teacher, best for older teens. There is no sex or drug use, but the language is relentless: Plugged In counted close to 100 f-words, plus homophobic, anti-Jewish and other slurs hurled at students. The teacher slaps a student, throws a chair and humiliates players to tears. The drummer practices until his hands bleed and staggers away from a bloody car crash. A former student's suicide is revealed. It sparks strong talk about ambition and the cost of greatness. Best for about 15 and up.
