The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story: parents' guide
Best for ages 15 and up. Rated TV-MA.
A sharp, absorbing courtroom drama for older teens that recreates the 1995 O.J. Simpson murder trial from both legal teams' points of view. The murders are not shown, but the victims' bodies are seen in pools of blood, crime scene photos recur, and Simpson holds a gun to his head while threatening suicide. Domestic abuse and police racism are central, and the N-word is said repeatedly once a detective's taped slurs become evidence. Other swearing includes f-words and s-words, and sexual content is limited to talk. The gore, the suicide scenes and the heavy themes are why we suggest 15.
What's in it

Language
StrongStrong language in several episodes includes f-words, along with s-words, "hell" and "goddammit." The N-word and other racist language come up repeatedly in later episodes, when a detective's recorded slurs become a key trial issue.
Sex and nudity
MildNo sex scenes or nudity, but two episodes include moderate sexual references, and affairs, divorce and gossip about the victim's private life are discussed.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateCharacters drink on screen, and one sympathetic lead smokes in nearly every scene. Drug references come up in a legal context, and one episode briefly shows drug use.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateSimpson's suicide threats, including holding a gun to his head and the famous freeway chase, are tense. A child's frightened voicemail begging her murdered mother to call back is heartbreaking.

Worth talking about
The show suggests the verdict was shaped by decades of police mistreatment of Black Los Angeles as much as by the evidence. Talk about why opinions on the case split so sharply.
