Run Lola Run: parents' guide

15+our pick

Best for ages 15 and up. Rated R for some violence and language.

A breathless, inventive German thriller with subtitles that suits older teens. Lola has 20 minutes to find 100,000 marks to save her boyfriend from a gangster, and the film replays her run three times with different outcomes. Expect shootings with visible blood, deadly traffic accidents, armed robberies and frequent subtitled profanity. Split-second flash-forwards about strangers' futures include a suicide and a woman injecting drugs. A couple is shown in bed under the sheets, and a quick montage shows bondage gear. Age 15 reflects the deaths, the language and those brief but harsh images.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Characters are shot, one in the chest with blood visible, and people are struck by speeding vehicles; a medic works to revive a patient in an ambulance. There are armed robberies with warning shots, beatings, and Lola's father slaps her.

Language

Strong

Frequent strong language in the subtitles, including repeated f-words and s-words, plus bitch, slut, dumbass and other insults hurled during arguments.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

Between runs, Lola and Manni talk while lying in bed, apparently naked under a sheet. Lola's father is having an affair. A split-second photo montage of a stranger's future shows a woman with a whip, in fetish gear, leading a man on a leash.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Strong

A split-second shot shows a woman shooting drugs into her arm, and the plot turns on money Manni owes a gangster. One man drinks whiskey from morning on and is visibly drunk, and characters smoke cigarettes.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Tense, fast and loud, with a ticking clock throughout. Each of the two leads dies in one version of events before time resets, and quick glimpses of strangers' futures include a suicide with blood.

Sensitive topics

  • Suicide
