Akira: parents' guide

16+our pick

Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for graphic violence and brief nudity.

A landmark of Japanese animation and one of its most violent; save it for older teens. In a crumbling future Tokyo, a teenage biker gains terrifying psychic powers and turns on everyone, including his best friend. Expect gang fights, shootings, crushed bodies, a severed arm and a grotesque body-horror finale in which a young woman is crushed to death. Earlier, a gang tries to sexually assault her and rips her top open, briefly baring her breasts. The teen bikers take unidentified pills, and the swearing includes an occasional f-word. Best for about 16 and up, for teens who can handle intense, nightmarish imagery.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Graphic and sustained: biker brawls, riots, shootings and people crushed under rubble, with lots of blood and lingering injury detail. A main character's arm is blasted off, dogs are shot, and a gang grabs a young woman and tries to sexually assault her.

Language

Moderate

Mostly words like 's--t,' 'bitch,' 'son of a bitch,' 'a--hole,' 'bastard,' 'goddamn' and 'damn,' but the BBFC reports infrequent f-words in recent releases, including the English dub. Wording differs between the two English dubs and the subtitles.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

During the attempted assault, a gang member rips open a young woman's top and her bare breasts are shown. There is some kissing and groping, not all of it wanted, but no sex scene.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Strong

Drug use is shown briefly: members of the teen biker gang, the Capsules, hand out and swallow unidentified pills with strange effects, and in one translation a user is said to look 'like a crack head.' Characters also drink in a bar and smoke.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Increasingly nightmarish: hallucinations of giant toys attacking, children with aged faces and eerie powers, and a finale in which a body swells into a monstrous mass that swallows people. Tetsuo's agony and the city's destruction are intense.

Sensitive topics

  • Sexual assault

Worth talking about

Tetsuo's new power turns into cruelty almost at once. Ask your teen why he uses it to hurt people, and how his old resentment of Kaneda shapes his choices.
