Goodfellas: parents' guide
Best for ages 17 and up. Rated R.
A brilliant but brutal true-crime classic meant for older teens and adults. It follows Henry Hill from a starstruck kid running errands for mobsters to a paranoid cocaine dealer who turns informant. Violence is sudden and bloody, with beatings, point-blank shootings, a stabbing and bodies dumped in trucks. A father beats his son with a belt, and Henry's marriage turns abusive, with guns drawn. The f-word is nearly constant, cocaine use and addiction are shown in detail, and there is implied oral sex with brief nudity. We suggest 17.
What's in it
Violence
StrongFrequent and graphic: men are shot in the head with spurts of blood, stabbed and beaten, and one is stomped until his face is disfigured. A neighbor is pistol-whipped bloody, a young waiter is shot, and murdered crew members turn up in a meat truck.
Language
StrongConstant. Movieguide counted roughly 340 obscenities, with the f-word in nearly every scene, plus 'motherf---er,' the n-word and other ethnic and antisemitic slurs.
Sex and nudity
ModerateHenry openly cheats on his wife, with passionate kissing and groping. One sexual scene implies oral sex without showing detail, nudity is glimpsed briefly in a sexual moment, and crude sexual talk is frequent.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongHenry deals and snorts cocaine, and his habit spirals into a jittery, paranoid addiction shown in detail; his wife and others use too. Heavy drinking and smoking are constant and often end in violence.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateViolence erupts without warning, often in the middle of friendly banter, which makes it jarring. Bodies are dumped and dug up, and a frantic late section captures Henry's drug-fueled paranoia.

Worth talking about
Henry narrates the gangster life as glamorous and fun. How does the film show what that life really costs, and why might its narrator be unreliable?
