No Country for Old Men: parents' guide

17+our pick

Best for ages 17 and up. Rated R for strong graphic violence and some language.

A masterful but harrowing crime thriller for older teens and adults who can handle relentless dread. A hunter stumbles on drug money in the Texas desert and is pursued by a near-unstoppable killer, while an aging sheriff trails behind. The violence is sudden and bloody: shootouts, a strangling, an air gun fired into people's heads, and gory aftermath at a drug deal gone wrong. Dogs are shot, and major characters die. Language is fairly light, with a couple of f-words. The sustained menace and graphic violence are why we suggest 17.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Graphic and frequent. A deputy is strangled with handcuff chains, a killer fires a cattle air gun into heads, many people are shot with blood shown, and fly-covered bodies litter a desert drug deal. A dog is shot point-blank.

Language

Moderate

Fairly light for an R film: one or two f-words (one spoken by a boy), an s-word, and scattered 'hell,' 'ass,' 'bitch' and 'goddamn,' plus a crude anatomical term.

Sex and nudity

Mild

Nothing sexual is shown. A man makes a crude remark to his wife about sex, a woman at a motel pool flirts and offers him a beer, and the killer is seen naked in a bathtub without explicit views.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

A truckload of heroin and its cash drive the plot. Adults drink beer and liquor, a woman seems tipsy, the hero fakes drunkenness at the border, and the killer injects stolen medication while treating a wound.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Sustained dread. The killer's calm, coin-toss cruelty makes every encounter tense, long cat-and-mouse sequences play out in dark motels, and the film offers little comfort as major characters die. A car crash leaves a bone jutting through skin.

Sensitive topics

  • Animal death

Worth talking about

The sheriff feels the world has turned more violent than he can understand. Does the film agree with him, or suggest that kind of violence was always there?
