Game of Thrones: parents' guide

18+our pick

Best for ages 18 and up. Rated TV-MA.

An adults-only fantasy epic and not a family watch at any stage. Over eight seasons, noble houses scheme and fight for the Iron Throne while an undead army gathers beyond a great wall in the north. Battles and executions are graphically gory, sex scenes are explicit with full nudity, and several women are raped on screen. Incest, the killing of children, torture and frequent f-words and c-words run through every season. Common Sense Media puts it at 18, and nothing in the later seasons softens it.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Constant and graphic: beheadings, slit throats, people burned alive, torture with mutilation and huge battles with severed limbs. Children and infants are murdered. Several rapes are shown, and sexual violence against women recurs across seasons.

Language

Strong

Plugged In notes the f-word several times an episode in many episodes, alongside the c-word, s-word, 'bastard' and 'bitch,' plus crude sexual slang and talk of anatomy.

Sex and nudity

Strong

Explicit sex scenes, full-frontal nudity of men and women and many brothel scenes. Incest between adult siblings is a major storyline, sex is used as a bargaining tool, and rape and coerced sex appear more than once.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Wine flows at every feast, and one main character drinks heavily, at one point until he vomits. Poisoned wine wipes out a whole family, pipe smoking appears, and potions and drugs are used to sedate or poison people.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Undead creatures, a massacre at a wedding, flayed bodies, a child burned at the stake and the sudden deaths of beloved characters make it relentlessly grim and often disturbing.

Sensitive topics

  • Sexual assault
  • Death of a child
  • Death of a parent
  • Suicide
  • Child abuse
  • Domestic abuse
  • Animal death

Worth talking about

Nearly every ruler justifies cruelty as necessary. Talk about which leaders the show presents as good, whether any stay that way, and what that says about power.
