Heat (1995): parents' guide

16+our pick

Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for violence and language.

A long, intense crime epic for older teens and adults who can handle bloody gunfights and heavy emotional material. A disciplined professional thief and an obsessive Los Angeles detective circle each other through a string of robberies that ends in a huge daylight shootout downtown. Many people are shot dead, a serial killer murders a young sex worker, and a teenage girl attempts suicide by cutting her wrists in a bathtub. Strong language is frequent. There is one very brief sex scene, an implied hookup and two affairs. The sustained violence and the suicide attempt are why we suggest 16.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Frequent and bloody: an armored-car heist where an unarmed guard is shot dead, a bank robbery that turns into a long machine-gun battle, a robber shot in the face while holding a child hostage, revenge killings, and a mercy killing at close range.

Language

Strong

Strong throughout. One count lists more than 70 obscenities, with many f-words and 'motherf--ker,' plus 's--t' and 'a--,' often screamed at bystanders during robberies.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

One very brief sex scene, and a lonely woman goes home with a near stranger and sleeps with him. Two married women have affairs, and couples kiss. None of the guides we checked reports any nudity.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Adults drink and smoke in bars, restaurants and homes. A woman says she is high on marijuana combined with an antidepressant. No drug use is shown in detail.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Long stretches of tension during the heists and shootout, a killer taunting a victim before her murder, her mother's grief, and a distressing scene of a teen found bleeding in a bathtub after a suicide attempt.

Sensitive topics

  • Suicide
  • Self-harm

Worth talking about

Both the detective and the thief give up almost everything, including their families, for their work. What does the film suggest that kind of obsession costs the people around them?
