Memento: parents' guide
Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for violence, language and some drug content.
A gripping, backward-told revenge thriller for older teens who can follow a puzzle and handle violence and very strong language. Leonard, who cannot form new memories, hunts the man he believes raped and killed his wife. Expect a bloody shooting in the first scene, beatings, including a punch to a woman's face, a fatal strangling, flashbacks to the attack on his wife, and constant f-words. Drug deals drive part of the plot, and a woman snorts what looks like cocaine. A fatal insulin overdose is shown in a flashback. The sexual assault theme and violence are why we suggest 16.
What's in it
Violence
StrongOpens with a man shot in the head in bloody detail. Leonard punches a woman in the face, hits a man with a bottle and strangles another to death. Sexual violence: flashbacks show his wife attacked, bruised and choking in a shower curtain; the rape is not shown.
Language
StrongHeavy. Movieguide counted 88 obscenities and two profanities, mostly f-words and s-words, with about a third packed into one heated scene. A harsh slur for women is also used.
Sex and nudity
MildNo sex scenes. Leonard is often shirtless and his bare backside is seen briefly. He hires an escort only to recreate a memory, and one scene hints at sex used as revenge, though nothing is shown.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongDrug deals and a dealer's stolen cash drive much of the plot. A woman snorts what appears to be cocaine, and characters drink beer and smoke cigarettes.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateDark and tense rather than jump-scary. The out-of-order story keeps viewers uneasy, flashbacks to the wife's attack are upsetting, and a woman's death from an insulin overdose is shown. The ending is bleak.
Sensitive topics
- Sexual assault

Worth talking about
Leonard trusts his notes more than people, yet he can be manipulated through them. Ask how memory shapes who we think we are, and whether revenge brings the peace he wants.
