Slow Horses: parents' guide
Best for ages 16 and up. Rated TV-MA.
A sharp, darkly funny British spy thriller best saved for older teens who can handle heavy swearing and sudden violence. A team of disgraced MI5 agents, led by the crude, boozy Jackson Lamb, keeps stumbling into real plots: kidnappings, terror attacks and assassinations. Expect frequent f-words and insults, including slurs from extremist characters, plus shootings that can be bloody and abrupt, and liked characters die across the seasons. There are no sex scenes, but the humor is often crude. One colleague fights to stay sober, another has a cocaine habit, and some deaths are, or are staged to look like, suicides, which is why we suggest 16.
What's in it
Violence
StrongEvery season has shootings, explosions and killings, some at close range with blood. Far-right racists threaten to behead a young Muslim hostage, later seasons open with a suicide bombing and a mass shooting, and main characters are killed.
Language
StrongVery heavy. Plugged In counted about 25 f-words in the first episode and more than 30 in one Season 6 episode, plus s-words, British insults like 'twat' and 'prick,' and racial slurs from far-right characters.
Sex and nudity
ModerateNo sex scenes or nudity are noted. Office affairs come up, a man slides his hand up a woman's skirt, and Lamb's humor is relentlessly crude; one gag involves a car air freshener shaped like male genitals.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongLamb drinks and smokes constantly, even at his desk, and pushes liquor on Catherine, a recovering alcoholic who attends AA meetings. From Season 2, agent Shirley Dander has a cocaine habit and anger problems that run through her storyline. Pub drinking is common.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateTense chases, kidnappings and ambushes, a bloody body in a bathtub, and murders staged to look like suicides or accidents. The dark comedy eases the tension, but the sudden deaths of favorite characters can hit hard.
Sensitive topics
- Suicide
- Addiction
- Racism
Worth talking about
Lamb insults and neglects his team yet goes to great lengths to protect them. Can someone be a good leader while treating people badly?
